There’s much more to Vietnamese food than piping hot bowls of beef noodle soup…

This cuisine is alive and kicking in Sydney, and it’s perfect when you’re craving fresh, fragrant, flavourful and very comforting food. With huge thanks to our thriving Vietnamese community, there’s a restaurant for every need. Whether you’re grabbing a crusty bánh mì on your lunch break or dining with mates over steaming bowls of pho and goi cuon (rice paper rolls), Vietnamese cuisine delivers. Here’s where to go for your fix of healthy(ish!), traditional and affordable Vietnamese food. Hungry yet?

Great Aunty Three
cuisinesVietnamese

Sitting on red plastic stools on a footpath and slurping fragrant hot pho, you could pretend you’re in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city, but Great Aunty Three delivers the goods right here in Enmore.

While the menu is made up of solid winners, it’s the acclaimed bánh mì that gets the lunch crowd queuing daily. Bite into pork slow-cooked for up to five hours in coconut milk, topped with pork crackling and green apple, or try the roast duck with watercress. Drool over the famous Bondi seafood roll with a whole soft shell crab lightly battered and juicy tiger prawns paired with summery zesty lemon sauce on a bed of mixed leafy greens. Don’t forget the rice net spring rolls, tasty fillings encased in extra thin rice vermicelli. Talk about crispy!

Dish Cult’s top pick: Tiger prawn bánh mì ($12)

Madame Nhu
cuisinesVietnamese

Craving the heavenly combination of Vietnamese food and beer? Madame Nhu might just be the restaurant you’re after. Describing itself as “Saigon in Sydney”, this restaurant serves up an extensive menu of phenomenally fragrant pho, from the traditional thin sliced beef, to the much less traditional but super health immune boosting chicken and veggies.

There is, of course, more than pho on offer, including spring rolls, salads and rice bowls, but if you’re feeling indecisive, go for the signature dish: dac biet pho beef, with three cuts of beef served over steaming hot, slow-cooked eight-hour beef broth.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Dac biet pho beef ($17.90)

Marrickville Pork Roll
cuisinesVietnamese

Fancy a quick meal that’s value-for-money and tastes like a million bucks? You can’t go past Marrickville Pork Roll. Open seven days a week, this is a cult favourite for Sydney’s bánh mì lovers. It’s gained so much traction that a second store in Darling Square was a necessary measure to meet demand.

There are over 10 types of ingredients to choose from, meaning you can whip up an absolute flavour-bomb of a baguette roll. Pick meats including classic original pork, pork crackling, and BBQ pork, and you’ll get your bánh mì loaded with vegetables and secret Vietnamese sauces. Is there anything better?

Dish Cult’s top pick: Bánh mì (of course)

An Restaurant
cuisinesVietnamese

One of the oldest pho joints in Sydney, An Restaurant is a long-running fan favourite. The ambience, with traditional hanging art and simple chairs, is no-frills but it brings the fuss-free Vietnamese street food vibe directly to Bankstown.

Featuring stock brewed over ten hours using beef shank bones, you’re guaranteed to walk out with a warm heart, (very) filled belly and satisfied smiles. While most go for the signature beef pho with 8 different variations to choose from, if you’re not feeling beef, go chicken – it’s quite possibly just as good.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Pho Bo ($17)
