A survey carried out by Parkdean Resorts has provided the answers to one of the UK and Ireland’s most asked culinary questions: What’s your favourite pancake topping?
Whipped cream comes in at number 10 on the list with 4 per cent of the UK and Ireland listing the sweet topping as their favourite. Glasgow is home to not one but two Singl-end cafe and bakehouses: one in Merchant City and another in Garnethill. The popular hangout offers a variety of gluten free, dairy free and vegan friendly menu choices, as well as pancakes topped with whipped cream (of course) and more!
At number nine is caramel, with another 4 per cent of the population screaming out for that sweetness on their pancakes. General Merchants is Belfast’s premier brunch destination with deliciously fluffy pancakes loaded with all sorts of toppings, including caramel for that real sweet fix.
Who doesn’t love mixed berries on their pancakes? A further four per cent of the UK and Ireland say the fruit is what they want the most on their pancakes. For that berry fix on your pancakes, look no further than Bristol’s Quay Street Diner. This all day diner is hugely popular and uses local suppliers for their ingredients, so definitely swing by for their tasty pancakes topped with berries. Yum.
Ice cream is what five per cent of the UK and Ireland said they wanted with their pancakes and what better way to enjoy this divine combination than with an outdoor setting on a fine sunny day? Dublin’s herbstreet provides just this with outdoor seating overlooking incoming barges, boats, and paddleboarders.
Another five per cent of people said treacle is their favourite topping. We can’t recommend Scarlett Green in London enough. Located on Noel Street in London, the Australian brunch venue is just what the dentist ordered when it comes to keeping that sweet tooth happy. With upbeat vibes and a bright atmosphere, what more could you want?
We’ve reached the halfway mark and at number five is banana. Six per cent of people preferred the fruit with their pancakes. Made with locally sourced ingredients, The Beach House in Edinburgh offers not just delicious pancakes but have sensational views too, being located on Portobello’s Esplanade.
Apparently Nutella is the most popular topping among those aged 18-24, so it could be a future number one. But for one, it sits at number four with 12 per cent loving the chocolate spread. The Brunch Club in Liverpool is the perfect brunch spot with a mouthwatering ‘Pancake Stack’ that won’t disappoint.
Strawberries and cream. Those two words together are synonymous with sunshine and happiness, and that’s just how 12 per cent of people feel when they have their pancakes topped up with them. Manchester’s Koffee Pot has been adored since 1978, with queues often at the door, as diners clamber in for their pancake / strawberries and cream fix.
In at number two is maple syrup, with 14 per cent of people unable to get enough of it with their pancakes. Cosy Club in Cardiff has two locations – St David’s and Cardiff Bay – and their pancakes with syrup and bacon, is – in a word – simply delicious. Ok, so that’s two words, but you get the point!
A whopping 34 per cent of people still love the age-old classic lemon and sugar on their pancakes! Sometimes original is best and in this case, it still rings true. The Dispensary in Newcastle serves up some sensational stacks of pancakes (all of which should be enjoyed with a candy floss hot chocolate, but that’s a different story!)
