The UK's best places for vegans
As more and more people choose to cut down on their meat intake or adopt a plant-based lifestyle, eateries around the UK are adapting their menus to suit all diets. The vegan movement is rapidly growing, along with peoples attitudes, and dishes everywhere are evolving. So, whether you’re a diehard vegan or simply trying it out, here’s a selection of some of the must-try vegan restaurants around the UK.
Vegan and vegetarian menu options are available at The Dunvegan – the venue just needs to know 24 hours in advance so the team can plan quantities accordingly. Expect locally sourced Scottish ingredients, cooked over fire and inspired by family influenced Argentine cuisine, traditions and cooking techniques. With a restaurant, rooms and deli-cafe located on the shore of the aptly named Loch Dunvegan, this is one of the most beautiful spots in the UK for vegan cuisine.
This contemporary restaurant serves authentic Thai cuisine cooked by a team of fantastic award-winning chefs. Kin Kao’s vegan offerings are among the best in Aberdeen, with the Gaeng Pa Jungle Curry it’s most famous. This classic hot and spicy curry cooked jungle style is served with mixed vegetables and flavoured with fresh Thai herbs. Not one to miss.
Castle Street Social is a casual dining restaurant located in the heart of the walled city, and serves fresh local produce. There’s a full vegan menu available boasting small plates and mains, including a Chickpea Burger and a Lentil Cottage Pie. Welcoming to all families, this place has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
Bonsai Plant Kitchen is an uber cool vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Brighton that serves some of the best South East Asian dishes around. Everything’s 100% plant-based, with the restaurant specialising in small plates and Bánh Mì sliders. Wash these down with some sake or a delicious craft cocktail, and soak up the hot neon pink vibes and great music.
Soda & Starch, situated right in the heart of Derry’s Craft Village, is the perfect setting to enjoy some delicious food – especially being so vegan-friendly. These guys are strongly committed to working with local suppliers, families and producers in order to offer delicious seasonal dishes cooked on the Kopa Oven Grills. We especially love the roast stuffed peppers with chickpeas and salsa verde.
Here at The Bear, the team specialise not only in amazing food, but amazing atmosphere, too. The chefs at The Bear are passionate about local produce; grown from Welsh soil and reared on Welsh grass, expect menus that are fresh, rustic and to die for. Vegan dishes we love at The Bear include the Tempura Cauliflower with crispy leeks and Marmite butter, and the Caramelised Parsnip & Kale Salad with toasted hazelnut, pomegranate and apple.
The Oak Restaurant serves brunch, lunch, coffee and dinner, while always welcoming guests to pop in to pick up some vegetables or a bottle of wine. As a grocer, this place specialises in organic, biodynamic and low intervention ingredients. At the heart of Oak Restaurant is the idea that great food puts the soil first. As growers, grocers and cooks these guys want to sell produce and serve food that’s simple and thoughtful, to find vegetables that not only look great and taste better, but also come from land that has been farmed properly, without chemicals or stripping the soil of its life.
The Electric Bar in Motherwell caters for everyone, with a dedicated vegetarian, vegan and gluten free menu. From Salsa Macaroni to Penne Arrabiata, from the Vegetable Burger to three different vegan curries (the potato and spinach is our fave), and more – there’s plenty of choice for vegans, and that’s only some of the mains we’ve called out! Expect plenty of good starters, sides and sweets too.
The Oaktree is a funky little vegan restaurant in Southend, Essex with a great menu featuring an array of vegan dishes served in an easygoing setting. Based in the seaside town of Leigh on Sea, the team behind this place is a passionate group of vegans and vegetarians that’s led by husband and wife team, Samantha and Jim Anderson. Offering both small plates and big plates, the menu is internationally inspired, with everything from Pad Thai to Bao Buns and Satay Curry.
