Where to eat out around the UK during spring
Spring is in the air and with this comes fresh blue skies, bright sunshine and flowers in bloom. It’s always a special season to emerge from the winter and start enjoying more daylight. And for restaurants and bars, this often means a change in menus as they roll with the seasons. To get you ready and excited for spring, we’ve rounded up some of the best places around the UK to head out to this springtime.
What better name for a restaurant this spring than Seasonality? This Berkshire-based, modern neighbourhood restaurant serves up ingredient-led dishes using seasonal produce. Open Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and dinner, Seasonality is driven by the seasons and offers diners creative dishes from chef Wesley Smalley. Definitely not one to be missed this spring.
Chapters in Wales showcases all that is great about Hay-on-Wye and its surrounding areas, by offering a seasonally changing set menu with high quality dishes and a focus on ethical sourcing, sustainability and minimal waste. No wonder it’s previously been awarded a Michelin Green Star! Expect the likes of Jerusalem Artichoke Crème Fraiche with hazelnut and artichoke crisps and Fallow Deer with Damson hoisin, charred celeriac and venison ragu.
Osso is a small, family-run neighbourhood restaurant with a casual atmosphere that offers a regularly changing menu of modern, innovative and most importantly – delicious plates of food. There’s a real emphasis on using fresh seasonal produce, which leads to big bold flavours with a slight global influence all paired with a small, carefully chosen wine list and friendly attentive service.
Academy is a haven in the heart of Belfast and is a place where you can experience locally sourced, seasonal ingredients that are crafted into beautiful dishes packed full of flavour. Offering an all-day dining experience, Academy is run by a team of students and hospitality professionals who are passionate about what they do. The staff and students aim to create a dining environment in which you will enjoy truly memorable hospitality experiences and it’s one we couldn’t recommend more for Northern Ireland this spring.
Jo & Co is run by a husband and wife team who say they “met in restaurants in 1998, dated in restaurants, holidayed in restaurants and have both worked in restaurants for over 50 years between them.” The experience and passion for the world of food really shines through on the menu, with dishes inspired by the couple’s travels around the globe. Having lived locally in Hove for many years, they wanted to create a home-from-home, in a neighbourhood restaurant. The results is somewhere that feels like a place to escape and a place to celebrate and laugh with friends – perfect for springtime.
If you’re out and about in Cardiff and the sun’s warming you nicely, you’ll no doubt want to make a pit stop for a refreshment. We recommend Kaya on the City Road. This shisha lounge / bar has a variety of soft drinks (hot and cold) to help you kick back and relax. You could go for a strong Arabic or Turkish coffee if you need something to perk you up, or if you want something to cool you down, there are a variety of options including fresh juices, iced lattes, blue lemonade and the very refreshing lemon and mint.
Stitch & Weave is the newest addition to Derry/L’Derry’s vibrant culinary and social scene. Nestled in the corner of Ebrington Square and directly adjacent to the city’s Peace Bridge, these guys are here to tantalise your taste buds and elevate your dining, drinking and social experience. Book a table and enjoy Derry’s favourite new bistro!
