Hot cross buns worthy of that post-Easter food coma...
The humble hot cross bun has come a long way from the soggy supermarket versions we remember from our childhood. These five Sydney bakeries make buns that are guaranteed to get you in the Easter spirit.
Every Easter, Sydneysiders flock to the iconic Bourke Street Bakery with one aim: to score some of Sydney’s best hot cross buns.
Choose to dine in and feel snug as a bug within the cosy space, or bring the Easter goodies home to share with your nearest and dearest.
These buns will be available until April 17 and can be ordered online and picked up in store.

Best known for its legendary sourdough, no one is surprised that Brickfields raises the bar at Easter time, pumping out delicious hot cross buns.
Prepared using the bakery’s signature sourdough, these melt in your mouth buns come chock full of plump cranberries, sultanas, currants and drizzled with a decadent Sri Lankan cinnamon syrupy glaze. The end result: a sweet but salty modern twist on a classic.
Those who choose to enjoy their HCBs in store will find a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a casual catch up with friends.

Looking to spice things up this Easter? Flour and Stone put a distinctly Italian spin on a classic that will transport you to the cobbled streets of Florence.
These Easter buns might not have the cross on top but they’re full of spice. Fragrant rosemary-infused brioche, spiced with cardamom, cinnamon, and clove, filled with dried fruit and confit orange for a zesty kick. The buns are finally coated in a sticky orange glaze. Delish!
Hot tip: While you’re waiting for your HCB order, check out the massive display cabinet packed with chocolate tarts, blueberry scones and gourmet pies.

Itching to sink your teeth into a seasonal treat but with less of that post-Easter carb-load regret? Berkelo has you covered.
These buns come with a healthy little secret. Containing no artificial sweeteners, no refined sugars and no bleached or commercial flours.
As for the taste? Let’s just say the proof is in the pudding. These buns are full of Murray River Organic currants and sultanas soaked in a house blend anise myrtle tea for an elevated fruit flavour that packs a punch. Finally brushed with a honey glaze for extra sweetness, these HCBs may take the cake for the best in Sydney…

Sydney sourdough pioneers Sonoma get in on the hot cross bun action with a unique take their bakers call the “not cross bun” or NXB, for short.
As you might have figured, there’s no cross on the top of these babies, instead an “S” is swirled on top of a bun redolent with cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, and full of sultanas, apricots, raisins, candied orange and cranberries. They are then finished with a sweet and spicy coffee bean glaze.
Have one slathered in Pepe Saya butter at one of their many bakeries around Sydney or take six home to what will be your very grateful family and friends.
