Queenstown offers a variety of cuisine from across the globe; the best part is the price; you don’t have to spend a fortune to indulge in delicious food.
Here are our favourite cheap and cheerful bites in the stunning city of Queenstown.
Nothing says cheap and cheerful quite like fish and chips; it is a beloved Kiwi classic. Erik’s Fish and Chips satisfies every salty, battered craving we could imagine. Grab your paper-wrapped bag of heavenly goodness and settle on a bench by the water, dining with scenic views of the ranges and lake NAME. The menu showcases the best of local produce, the potatoes are grown in Canterbury, and the fish is delivered daily from Dunedin. Erik’s serves up calamari, king prawns, Monk fish and blue cod. If you are after a steal, the $10 meal deal gets you a Hoki (fish) and small chips. There are even deals to suit bigger groups and families.
Caribe Latin Kitchen is a colourful little spot that specialises in homey Mexican and Latin American fare. The cuisine is creative, flavourful and unforgettable; the perfect combination of humble and intense. Get your hands dirty with a naked burrito, pairing black beans with salad, rice, avocado and Caribe sauce. Add in shredded chicken, mince, slow-roasted pork or shredded prime beef. The menu also features tacos, nachos, chimichangas and tapas. The latter is a selection of nibbles including a Cuban sandwich and Venezuelan tequeños; these are mozzarella sticks! End the night with something sweet; the Spanish churros are mouth-wateringly tasty and come with chocolate or caramel sauce.
Taco Medic brings soul to fast food; they strive to create a flavour to satisfy every foodie. The menu is proudly gluten-free, and the tacos are authentic corn tortillas which are handmade fresh every day. The ingredients in the tacos are locally sourced. The taco menu is split up into land, sea and soil; the adoboman is our go-to with pulled free-range chicken, slow-cooked in a rich homemade smoke adobo gravy, creamy jalapeño sauce, pineapple salsa and coriander. Usually, the tacos are $8 each, but on Tuesdays, they are only $6! When you have finally reached your taco limit, head over to the margarita side of the menu and fill up on tequila.
Pizza, pasta and happiness; Farelli’s Trattoria has it all. The homely Italian eatery is nestled into Steamer Wharf; it is idyllic, rustic and welcoming; setting the stage for an authentic Italian experience. We love this spot for cosy family dinners and intimate date nights. Share the Farelli’s garlic ciabatta bread, the smoked salmon bruschetta or the arancini. For the main event, dig into a big bowl of gnocchi alfredo with creamy mushrooms, spinach béchamel and ricotta, house potato gnocchi, pecorino and chive olive. Save space for dessert, as the Nutella lava cake is not to be missed.
You can’t go wrong with a burger, but you can go right; Devil Burger is simply irresistible. The cheap and cheerful eatery is a great late-night spot, offering an easy bite to eat that tastes incredible. Try something new with the blue devil, made with a prime NZ beef patty, streaky bacon, poached pears, blue cheese, lettuce, tomato, red onion, aioli and tomato relish. Other burgers include the dark knight (venison), devil’s Moroccan (lamb) and the spicy devil (chicken). Devil Burger also offer an insane range of veggie burgers, wraps, ribs and curry cheese chips.
