And the winner is...
Sixteen of the finest burgers from across the country were chosen as the finalists of the revered National Burger Awards. Now in its eighth year, the 2022 event saw chefs from restaurants and street food traders go head-to-head in a live cooking competition to see whose signature burger creation was the best in the UK.
This year’s line-up included former finalist MEATliquor, who battled against other big-name high street brands, including Bleecker, and Burger and Lobster, as well as strong independent names such as Manchester’s That Burger Place and Bristol’s Danny’s Burgers.
The live cook-off took place yesterday (20th April 2022) at Islington Metal Works in London. On top of the signature round, chefs took part in a technical show-down that saw them create a burger from a specific selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors in a bid to be crowned Burger Chef of the Year, as well as a vegan round sponsored by The Vegetarian Butcher and Kerrymaid. Winners were chosen by a hand-picked selection of esteemed industry judges.
Entries included the Burger Shop Classic from Burger Shop, the Towering Inferno – Double Stack from Fridays UK, the Mustard BBQ Brisket Burger from HILLS and the Cheeseburger Deluxe from MEATliquor (which will be going on sale to the general public very soon).
So whose burger won? Well, it’s fair to say now that the UK’s best burger can be found in Bristol! Danny’s Burgers was the winner with The Beef Chucky 2.0.
Danny’s Burgers in Brislington, an area in south east Bristol, won over the judges at the UK-wide event with The Beef Chucky 2.0. The burger features a 50-day dry aged beef blend, dry aged ex-dairy chuck roll, Kerrymaid American cheese, a beer cheese sauce, Kühne sliced dill pickles, mustard, candied jalapeños and fresh white onions, encased in a seeded brioche bun.
The National Burger Awards also crowned a Burger Chef of the Year, which went to Oz Harborth of Plymouth’s Zephyr Burgers. Harborth took the title after building a delicious technical burger – the Double Patty Melt – from a selection of ingredients supplied by event sponsors.
The competition also gave an award to the nation’s Best Vegan Burger, which came from Brecon in Wales. Cai Williams of HILLS impressed the judges with The Vegan Pickle & Spice, made with a NoBeef Burger from The Vegetarian Butcher, along with crispy fried onions, pickled red cabbage, gochujang, spring onions and sushi ginger.
The night’s other winners were Birmingham’s Stripclub Streetfood, which earned the Blogger’s Choice award with The Truffle Drip burger; and Buckinghamshire restaurant Burgervore, which won the Mayo Mixologist challenge, sponsored by Hellmann’s.
