Gluten is a ubiquitous protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and their derivatives, but it doesn’t suit everyone’s digestive system and can make some extremely unwell. You may have adopted a gluten-free diet for various reasons, including medical conditions like celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, or wheat allergy, as well as personal dietary preferences. If you’re following this diet you might be concerned about finding suitable dining options, especially if it’s essential you avoid the stuff. Fear not, as Edinburgh boasts a growing number of eateries and shops that cater to your needs. Here are a handful of our faves.

Are you craving the classic comfort food of fish and chips, but feel it’s off-limits due to the presence of gluten in the batter? Bertie’s has you covered. They have gluten-free options for both batter and breadcrumbs, each of which are cooked separately in vegetable oil. So you can get your fix without the fear.
Additionally, the menu here has clear icons showing allergens. This means you don’t have to trawl laboriously through the menu to find something you can eat. A quick glance will tell you all you need to know. We love the caramel apple crumble with custard that gets the green light for gluten-free diners. And there’s a kids selection too, so the restaurant caters for those of all ages and stages.
Tasting menus can cause a real headache for those with dietary requirements, as some chefs are unable to cater for specific needs. However, Aizle is very different. While you will need to give them some notice (we recommend letting them know at the time of booking), they will ensure all of the items on your set eight-course feast are gluten-free. The same principle applies if you’re vegetarian, pescatarian, pregnant, can’t eat seafood, or have a nut allergy.
All the dishes are created using seasonal ingredients, so the selection changes frequently, meaning you can return again and again. The cost comes in at £105 per person, with a paired drinks package for £75 per person. Found in the Garden Room at The Kimpton Charlotte Square, this restaurant has an airy and botanical vibe, that’s ideal for a special occasion or fancy date night.
Wheat-heavy Italian food is out for gluten-free diners, right? Wrong. At eateries like La Locanda, they have alternatives to pizza and pasta so you can sate your desire for classic Mediterranean fare. The kitchen here may be small, but it packs and punches and delivers exciting, enticing soul food that won’t upset your gut. You’ll find the restaurant on the steep side of Cockburn Street in the Old Town handy for Waverley Station; a great spot to people-watch in the sun, from the cluster of outdoor tables. It’s part of the Valvona & Crolla group, well known in the city for their authentic fare and fantastic service.
As almost everything on the menu at the Educated Flea is gluten-free, you pretty much have your pick. Do let the staff know about your intolerance though, so they can steer you away from anything that isn’t. Bread for the table (by 3Bee) is a goer too, as they keep a stash that’s gluten-free well away from the regular bread, to remove any chance of cross-contamination.
Many of the dishes are vegan, making this absolute heaven for those who are combining both dietary requirements in one. Get some sharing plates, or book for a multiple-course meal at lunch or dinner, with nutritious dishes such as lemon marinated chicken with heirloom tomato salad, black olives, basil, red onion and feta sauce, and grilled mackerel salad with romaine, parmesan, bacon, boiled egg, new potato, avocado, roast pepper and blue cheese vinaigrette on the menu.
Those with a sweet tooth can indulge at Sugar Daddy’s Bakery, safe in the knowledge that everything here is gluten-free. The family-run establishment in Marchmont offers an array of scrumptious cakes, scones, cupcakes, cake pots, truffles, doughnuts, cookies and brownies, as well as savouries such as pizzas and sausage rolls and drinks. Everything is made in-house and they even make extravagant wedding and celebration cakes to order. Pop into the pink palace any time from Wednesday to Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm and sweeten up your life. But be warned, you may be drooling within seconds of perusing the laden shelves of the tempting counter.
