Ireland's best restaurants for vegans
Whether you’re following a vegan diet, simply trying to cut down on your meat and dairy consumption, or seeing out Veganuary, veganism is attracting more people. The demand is so high more eateries are adapting their menus, not least in Ireland which is now full of options for vegan diners. We’ve rounded up some of Ireland’s best places for vegan food, which you need to book with next time you dine out.
The menu at Konkan includes specialities mainly from the south of India, as well as all the Indian dishes popular in Ireland; the biryanis and samosas have been reviewed to be the best in Dublin. The main focus of the Konkan team has always been to serve the best quality Indian food at reasonable prices. In keeping with this, they prepare their food fresh to order and make all their own spice masalas, yoghurt and paneer (cheese) in-house.
Woolshed has become a meeting place for people to come and chat through the one true universal language: “SPORT”. As well as being one of, if not the number one place for sports enthusiasts in Cork, it’s also vegan-friendly offering a killer menu for those following a plant-based diet. From Beyond Meat Burgers to Vegan Nachos, Woolshed boasts some of the city’s best vegan bar food courtesy of Holy Smoke restaurants, as well as 17 screens for sports and cracking cold beers.
Grab one of the most delicious, handmade burgers in Cork (who needs to be humble when you’re good?), which include juicy vegetarian/vegan and gluten-free options. An arcade, restaurant and bar all in one, this place brings the fun as well as the good, tasty vegan burgers that have become so popular in Cork. The pizzas here are also seriously good, so you’re very spoiled for choice!
One of Galway’s most enduring restaurants, housed in one of the city’s most iconic restaurant spaces, Ard Bia has always placed as much emphasis on community experiences and aesthetic stimulation as on serving great food in a fun environment. The team believes in having roots in a place whilst having an identity that transcends location and takes inspiration from around the world. The vegan-friendly menu includes Kilbeggan oat granola for breakfast, roast aubergine for lunch and a sweet potato gnocchi for mains, with wild mushrooms, cauliflower, kohlrabi and almonds. Yum.
Aye was created to bring laid back vibes to Cork city centre, to create a place of positivity, and experience the Aye energy. As the motto goes: Let your vibe attract your tribe. The bar is set up amongst the beautiful plant-life decor that provides the perfect atmosphere for cocktails, sharing boards, bites and great tunes with friends, date nights or a Saturday night out. From the mouthwatering selection of tasting plates, we love the Turkish Grille Carrots best.
When you come to Stoked the team’s aim is to leave you feeling that way. Stoked was created and launched in April 2018, with a menu hand-selected from travels all over the world. These guys have taken the best of what they have found and offer it to you. By offering small and big sharing plates, Stoked wants to promote sharing and allow everyone at the table to taste many dishes and in doing so making your experience more sociable. Expect great produce sourced from the northwest coast of Ireland along the Wild Atlantic Way. There’s a brilliant vegan section on the menu that includes Buffalo Cauliflower Wings and even Vegan Sushi, among others.
Step back in time to 1902 when The Empire Theatre graced this spot here on Patrick Street, Kilkenny – a grand creation brought to life by the visionary Lady Desart. Evolving over time into The Kilkenny Theatre and then Stallards Theatre, the allure of this spot grew with each chapter. Preserving its rich history, Zuni now stands as a testament to the past, blending old and new. Only the facade and the Box Office cocktail bar, which was the original box office for the theatre, remain from the historic building. There are lunch and dinner menus, with fantastic vegan options on each. Try the Turmeric and Ginger Hummus, it’s fantastic and comes with pickled baby carrots, bulgar wheat quinoa, edamame beans, spring onion, roast sweet potato, crispy chickpeas, salsa verde and garlic flatbread.
Vincenzo’s Grill House is a reincarnation of an Italian restaurant and now a retro styled eatery offering dishes made with locally sourced food to please a multitude of tastes. Vincenzo’s is located within the George Hotel, which in turn is tightly woven into Limerick city’s vibrant heart. Vincenzo’s seeks to deliver the best in handmade dishes, homemade desserts and exquisitely crafted cocktails. There’s a great Meat Free Burger for vegans, as well as a Mushroom Tortellini in the pasta section. The star for us though is the Melanzanie pizza with grilled aubergine, tomato sauce, oregano, basil and virgin olive oil.
No. 3 Wine Bar & Restaurant is a beautifully designed space infusing old with new in a restaurant and bar environment. The world inspired food menus are designed to accommodate diners with varying dietary requirements. So as well as fish, meat and poultry dishes, there’s also plenty of flavoursome choices for vegans and vegetarians. Every dish is available as a gluten free option, too. We recommend the Jambalaya – a Creole rice dish with paprika, soft beans, cajun and bell peppers.
