Edinburgh's best restaurants for paella

The Scottish capital might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of delicious, saffron-infused paella – but Edinburgh might just surprise you! The city offers up a rich array of Spanish restaurants, all designed to tantalise your taste buds and provide you with a little slice of sunny Spain. Perfect for sharing between two, three, four or more, paella is both comforting and exciting. Usually topped with seafood, seasonal veg (or more traditionally – rabbit!) we’ve rounded up some of the best places in Edinburgh to sample some seriously tasty paella.

If it’s Spanish authenticity and delicious tasting food you’re after (in a beautiful location no less) then head to Malvarosa on Portobello High Street. Organic and high-quality produce feature throughout the menu and most of the ingredients are locally sourced. There are five paella options to choose from here: vegetables, seafood, pil-pil, mixed or – the special – the Malvarosa (complete with chicken, broad beans, paprika, rosemary and saffron). With its laid-back but welcoming atmosphere, Malvarosa is well-loved by Portobello locals. The prices are reasonable, and the staff always have a big smile on their face. If you’re by the sea and fancy some seriously good Spanish food, this one’s not to be missed!

As if you need any excuse to visit Stockbridge’s wonderful food-market! Popping up each Sunday, the market has been providing Edinburgh with fantastic local produce for several years. The real attraction here is the paella stand, ran by Lovely Paella – a small catering company who offer up portions of tasty paella divided into handy boxes that you can munch from as you stroll around the rest of the market or take home to eat later. There’s always a bit of a queue here, but don’t let that put you off! We guarantee once you inhale the fresh spices warming in one of the ginormous paella pans, you’ll want to grab yourself a sample. We recommend the Arroz de Marisco: a beautifully prepared paella full of well-seasoned chicken and veg.

This Spanish restaurant is as authentic as they come. Boasting a huge tapas menu – highlights include the Calamares Andaluza (deep-fried calamari) Ham Croquetas and Patatas Bravas – La Sal is also home to a selection of larger evening plates, not least the delicious paellas. There’s a meat, fish and vegetarian option, so here you’ll find something to suit all diets. If you can, leave room for dessert where you’ll be tempted by the delectable homemade Galician Almond Cake and Churros. For around £12 for a large paella (designed to be shared with a minimum of two people), combined with a fun, welcoming service, you’ve really got no excuse!

Hip bar and restaurant specialising in creative modern eats, a visit to Rollo is always guaranteed to please. The restaurant doesn’t just serve up Spanish food – the menu borrows from a real mix of different cuisines – but the paella dish has long remained a firm favourite among locals. With different ingredients incorporated into this rice-based dish depending on what’s in season, you’re in for a real surprise (and treat) every time. The atmosphere is second to none: full of personality and charm, and the staff are always attentive. Beautifully adorned with low-level lighting and candles on each table, we promise you won’t want to leave.

With branches in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, Café Andaluz has been bringing Scotland a taste of sunny Spain for the better half of 18 years. With furnishings from Spain (rich fabrics and beautiful mosaic tiles), the restaurant certainly looks the part. The prices are reasonable – a paella for two will set you back around £12.50 each – and there’s even an entire vegan and vegetarian menu, so no-one will go without. We recommend the Paella De Mariscos: filled with North Atlantic cod, squid and Shetland mussels, and topped with two large shell-on king prawns, there’s nothing much more decadent and delicious.
