Glasgow is a treasure trove of diverse culinary experiences. Among the many international flavours that grace its streets, Malaysian cuisine offers an enticing voyage for your taste buds! Join us as we embark on a culinary adventure through Glasgow’s Malaysian food scene, exploring five distinct venues that offer a slice of Malaysia’s culinary heritage.
Nestled in the heart of Glasgow’s West End, Satu Satu beckons with the warm embrace of Malaysian hospitality. This cosy Malaysian Chinese cafe invites you to immerse yourself in a world of delectable flavours and very generous portions! A must-try is their Char Kway Teow, a stir-fried noodle dish bursting with savoury goodness, perfectly complemented by a soothing Teh Tarik (hot milk tea). Satu Satu’s charming ambiance and friendly staff create an inviting atmosphere that keeps patrons coming back for more.
Locals and visitors alike were devastated when Julie Lin closed her beloved Malaysian café ‘Julie’s Kopitiam’ in early 2023. Happily, however, she has gone on to open a new venue in Partick: Ga Ga, a Malaysian-inspired diner and cocktail bar. The food here is as good as her old spot, capturing the essence of Malaysian street food with a contemporary twist.
Be sure to try the hake dish with chilli coconut butter and samphire, or for those who like heat, the fried chicken dish with sichuan hot sauce and pickled mooli is something to behold. There’s plenty for veggies too — real highlights include their kerabu noodle salad with heritage carrots, and the sweet potato chips with plum ketchup. Enjoy your meal with a Malaysian-inspired tipple (like their Banana Sesame Sour) and thank us later!
Goo Duck is a no-frills eatery that serves classic dishes from China, Malaysia and Thailand. The atmosphere is laid-back and the service is friendly — if you’re at a loss about what to order, one of the waiters will happily make recommendations! Dive into their salted egg yolk coated shrimp, or the rich and decadent Malaysian Chicken curry. All the plates are reasonably priced, and the food is super fresh. What’s not to like?
Tucked away in Anniesland, I-Chai Restaurant is all about capturing the authentic flavours of Southeast Asia. Using fresh and seasonal ingredients, the team takes inspiration from ancient cooking techniques, making it a must-visit for those seeking a fusion experience. Their laksa curry is warming and filled with fresh seafood, and their Malaysian butter prawns (sautéed with lemongrass and curry leaf), are as fragrant and moreish as you like. There’s plenty for non-meat eaters here too, as well as a range of set menus that are brilliant value for money.
For an upscale Malaysian dining experience, head to Mamasan Bar & Brasserie. With glitzy lighting, leather booths, and marble flooring , it’s a great spot to enjoy the best of Malaysian cuisine in luxury surroundings. Savour the oyster mushroom doughnuts, with cucumber ketchup and plum jam, or for a taste of tradition, indulge in their ‘Luxury Pad Thai’, complete with langoustine, king prawns and rice noodles. Mamasan’s ambiance and attention to detail elevate the Malaysian dining experience to a whole new level — this one’s hard to beat.
