Festive days out in Edinburgh
Christmas is fast creeping up on us and the Scottish capital is about to burst into life with its annual celebration of all things yuletide. This year the choice of things to do and places to go is bigger and better than ever before. Sure to delight those of all ages, here are our top picks for festive days out in Edinburgh.
While some cities have cancelled their Christmas markets for 2021, Edinburgh is one of those retaining their alfresco extravaganza. And we’re delighted because the Christmas markets on offer here are among the best in the land. The main market takes place from 20th November 2021 to 4th January 2022 in East Princes Street Gardens. But there are additional festive sites on West Princes Street and George Street, with lots of attractions for all the family; bumper cars, waltzers, a Christmas tree maze, the Forth One Big Wheel, an ice rink, Santa’s Grotto and Santa land, Viennese style carousels and pop-up events like the Nativity Carol Concert on the 28th November (residents can take advantage of discounts on many of the rides). And the event is a shopper’s dream too, with a wealth of traditional stalls, as well as delectable seasonal treats. If you’re not feeling Christmassy yet, pay the Christmas Markets a visit, grab yourself a steaming mug of German Glühwein, and you soon will be.
Edinburgh is undoubtedly a city of dog-lovers. So while there are lots of opportunities for children to meet Santa, this is one for the owners of fur-babies. Little Dobbies is a new addition to the charming Stockbridge area, just north of the New Town. And for 2021, it’s welcoming good boys and girls with waggy tails into its grotto. For £6.99 you’ll get a photo of your pup with Santa and a special canine treat (suitable for your dog’s size) to take away. If you have human children, they can be booked in for their own Dobbies Grotto experience too.
Those preferring a quieter, more refined approach to advent festivities will appreciate the elegant atmosphere and sumptuous surroundings of this unique five-star hotel. The grand, baroque interiors are never more impressive than when adorned with seasonal decorations. Take a seat by a roaring log fire in Rhubarb or the Tapestry Room, the Leather Room or the theatrical Yellow Room, sip on fine Champagne and sample the finger sandwiches, savoury delicacies and indulgent sweet treats. Carefully thought out vegan and vegetarian menus are also available. Christmas day dinners can also be taken at the prestigious venue.
Pretty lights and decorations are everywhere in December. But Christmas at the Botanics is something else. From 4.30pm everyday, this already stunning outdoor space is transformed into a fairyland, taking festive decorations to another level. Wander through sparkling tunnels of light, installations, visual displays choreographed to music, waterside reflections, a fire garden and trees draped in vibrant illuminated colours. And all of this under nature’s own breathtaking canopy – the starry night sky. This year, a range of street food vendors will be selling warming seasonal fare and visitors can toast marshmallows over onsite fire-pits. The experience is truly mesmerising and often sells out quickly, so book a place if Christmas at the Botanics takes your fancy. Do be aware that the immersive event is held outdoors, so be sure to dress for walking in the Scottish weather (comfy shoes and waterproofs are a must!)
The long-awaited opening of the St James Quarter has provided plenty of exciting new venues for locals and visitors to explore. As the gleaming new mall is the place for Christmas shopping in 2021, the opening of an après ski-themed festive pop-up right outside is fantastic news. Take a break from a hard day’s gift-buying with a boozy pit-stop at Bar Hütte. It offers private hire Hüttes for groups (perfect if you’re out for the day with your mates or all your family), as well as table bookings. Exclusive use Hüttes are the ideal solution if you’d rather not share your space, but still want to feel part of the action. There’ll be hot toddies, prosecco, mugs of cocoa, live music sessions, a grotto and lashings of Alpine hospitality. If you haven’t been able to make it to the snow-covered slopes this year, Bar Hütte is the next best thing. And it’s right in the centre of town.
