Why? We don’t know exactly, but we do know that it certainly applies to the Pastrami Sandwich. Instead of arguing against the facts, let’s leave it to the experts and enjoy a skilfully crafted lunch at one of the below spots.
As the name would suggest, you’ll find a killer pastrami sandwich at Pastrami & Rye. Owner, Dave Donoghue, puts his NYC delicatessen experience to good use by offering a range of Jewish-style classics at his Ellerslie deli and coffee shop. On their menu, you will find three options containing their delicious house-made pastrami. First up, we have the ‘Make it a Rueben’, which comes paired with sauerkraut and cheese. For an ultra-simple option, their ‘Pastrami on Rye’ comes with exactly that – just pastrami. And if you’re wanting to share, ‘The Rueben 1 Meter Long Sub’ will do the trick. This bad boy comes served with pickle, mustard, and provolone cheese – and serves about 10 people.
Inspired by American cuisine, Juke Joint presents a selection of mouth-watering southern-style barbecue dishes across their four Auckland locations. Each destination is recognisable by their iconic black and yellow retro aesthetic – making the hunt for your sammie that much easier. Under their sandwich selection is a pickle, sauerkraut, and pastrami combo calling your name. Any gluten-free diners will be stoked to hear that their menu also gives you the freedom to choose between a wild wheat sourdough bun or a gluten & dairy-free wrap. Plus, you can switch up your sauce options from BBQ to ranch or chipotle.
We can always count on the Federal Delicatessen (aka. The Fed) to whip up a good feed. Listed funder their Bagels & Sandwiches section is the Toasted Reuben. This crowd-favourite comes served as a jam-packed pastrami sandwich wedged between two-pieces of rye. Chef Al Brown sticks to the classics by pairing the meat with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, mustard, and Russian dressing. These authentic NYC flavours, combined with the Fed’s diner aesthetic, makes it hard to believe you’re not actually in the USA.
Amongst a selection of salads, platters, and pastries, Ima Cuisine’s eastern-Mediterranean menu also includes several divine sandwiches – such as the Brick Lane Salt Beef. Stacked between two pieces of homemade rye bread, you’ll taste a generous amount of home-cured pastrami, Israeli pickles, and wholegrain mustard. To end the meal on a sweet note, owner Yael Shochat is also heavily-praised for her insane cakes, so they’re definitely worth a try.
Perched along K Road is the charming Fort Greene artisan bakery. Owner and chef, Liam Fox, takes his craft seriously, and it shows – producing an array of high-quality goodies such as their take on the Reuben Sandwich. Made with salt-beef brisket, homemade sauerkraut, Russian dressing, mustard, pickles, and Swiss cheese, you simply can’t go wrong. Plus, the bread itself is also homemade, giving it that extra special touch.
