As the countdown to the Great North Run begins, we want to make sure you’re prepared for your big day. Whether you need a burst of energy beforehand or somewhere to enjoy a well deserved drink after the run, we’ve got you. In our guide below you’ll find the best places to grab the right food and have a drink.

Where to...

Carb up

If you’re one of the runners, then you know you need proper nutrition to keep you going. Every strenuous activity should be preceded by food high in carbs to maximise your performance and recovery. Check out these places for your carb load-up.

Quay Ingredient
Quay Ingredient Newcastle

Quay Ingredient is a cosy coffee shop located under the Tyne Bridge. Get your energy levels up with a selection of sandwiches, from meat-fuelled options to protein-filled eggs. Opens as early as 8am.

Serving both classics and French specialities, Cote is the perfect breakfast spot. Pair light breakfast options (croissants or salmon and eggs) with sandwiches to start your day right.

Where to get...

The right protein

To battle post-event hunger pangs, go for protein-rich food. Protein helps your muscles recover and boost your metabolism. Perfect choice if you’re planning on getting some dessert later.

St Sushi
St Sushi Newcastle

As the title suggests, this Japanese restaurant specialises in sushi. The menu features various types: nigiri, gunkan, maki and temaki. If you’re feeling especially hungry go for a bento box with sushi as a side. The place gets busy on weekends so make sure you book a table.

Dojo
Dojo Newcastle

Dojo is a place that will appeal to fans of Japanese and Korean culture thanks to its retro interior filled with posters and iconic Japanese characters. The menu does justice to the traditional cuisine with highlights such as chicken katsu in a curry sauce and a king prawn bento set.

Where to get...

A smoothie

There’s no better way to cool down after an exercise than with a refreshing beverage. A smoothie’s your best bet for your run as it’s packed with both fruits and sugar.

Boost Juice Bar

Located in the heart of the city centre, Boost Juice Bar offers instant refreshment with a selection of fruity smoothies. You can customise yours not just by flavour, but by health requirements too, such as low fat, gluten-free or low in calories.

Kaspa’s

Time to treat yourself. Kaspa’s is home to generously sized desserts that will satisfy your sweet tooth, but for now you can order a refreshing smoothie to cool down with. There are a number of combinations of healthy fruits, ice and fruit purees to choose from. The tropical Pineapple Sunset is a favourite; a perfect blend of pineapple, papaya and mango.

Where to go...

For a celebratory drink

The Great North Run is an event that calls for a celebration afterwards. And what better way to celebrate than having a drink with your friends and family?
