The only dedicated toastie place in Manchester, Frankie’s is certainly the place to start with when talking about cheese toasties in Manchester. A true Mancunian institution created by a Manc lad who came up with the idea when he was hungry and essentially thought, “I could just murder* (devour) a cheese ‘n’ bean toastie right now”. The ‘Our Story’ page on their page is very funny. Frankie’s Toasties has dozens of takes on the toastie with a whole section dedicated to the cheese toastie, such as ‘Cheesy Meatballs’, ‘Cheese ‘N’ Ham’ and ‘Barnston ‘N’ Cheese’. There is a whole section of vegan toasties too. Cheap, inclusive and friendly. Three big reasons to visit this place.
Located in the Smithfield Buildings, Northern Quarter, North Tea Power is a powerhouse when it comes to breakfast and brunch. With lots of great coffee, tea and food options in a beautiful and convenient location, North Tea Power is a perfect spot in the morning. But as we are focusing on cheese toasties we have to dissect theirs. The verdict is it’s scrumptious! It’s made with sourdough bread, Montgomery Cheddar, Emmental and the addition of leeks, onions and garlic. Sounds lovely, right?
These northerners at Northern Soul certainly know how to make a good toastie! If you want to have some warm comfort food, there is no better place in terms of value for money. A grilled cheese sandwich averaging roughly £6, served with coleslaw or potato chips and a house pickle is a bargain compared with other places in the Northern Quarter. In addition to their fancy but cheap toasties, they serve mac ‘n’ cheese, fries and chicken wings, which are all reasonably priced. If you want a high quality and cheap cheese toastie in a very friendly place, then this spot is the place for you.
Nibble, an independent female-owned café in the Northern Quarter is a unique and comfy place with lots of tasty food. Run by a group off friends, they make everything from scratch showing why this place is so friendly and unique. They have lots of fabulous food options from vegan breakfasts to a smoked salmon bagel. And when it comes to their cheese toasties… well just check out their toastie and sandwiches special menu at their shop to see exactly what’s on offer. No spoilers here.
Trove (they also have places in Levenshulme and Marble Street too) are a bakery, shop and café that make their own sourdough bread, pastries, jams, chutneys and cakes to absolute perfection. But to make this list you must have a great cheese toastie… which they do! Their ‘Kimcheese’ is made with Kimchi (Korean fermented vegetables) and is a fantastic take on the classic cheese toastie.
