There's dumpling you should know
When in a toss-up over what to eat, dumplings are always a safe bet and there are plenty of great places across the city to grab a drink and a plate of the good stuff. Here are some of Sydney’s top spots where you can indulge in a dumpling party with your mates (especially handy when you’re sick of traditional pub fare).
With multiple locations spread across the city, Chef’s Gallery has long been a standing Sydnersider favourite for hearty Asian dishes, handmade noodles, and of course, pan-fried dumplings. This is also a top spot to go if you’re craving Chinese-style tapas (that’s mini fairy floss burgers, and tataki wagyu beef with Sichuan dressing for you).
While the menu here is extensive and covers just about everything you’d want in a Chinese meal (with every dish set to get you drooling), don’t sleep on their fresh handmade dumplings that range from prawn and pork wontons in signature spicy sauce to xiao long bao and pan-fried pork potstickers.
Ever had Nepalese dumplings? No? You’re missing out. Momo Bar dishes out dumplings and poke bowls to hungry diners flocking into their Manly outpost from all across Sydney. Create your own platter and choose from an array of fillings like lamb and pork, lentils, mushroom and parmesan, or a 50/50 mix. Next up, pick a style from the likes of their traditional Nepalese (Achaar sauce in broth and paprika butter) or their Manly style garlic yoghurt and paprika butter sauce.
Their mushroom momos are truly addictive and after one bite into these sumptuous dumplings –they don’t skimp on filling here– you’ll be hooked.
For first timers, Dish Cult recommends the large mushroom and parmesan dumplings to kick start your dining adventure.
Mr.Chen’s might be named after the epic noodle affair that goes on in their kitchen daily, but it’d be almost a sin to miss out on their made-to-order dumplings.
Steamed dumplings are served hot in a bamboo basket and you can also grab plates piled high with pan-fried dumplings filled with a choice of beef & shallots, chicken & corn, pork & egg and more. If you’re not a fan of meat, their vegetarian steamed dumplings are a gorgeous blend of green and white that taste just as good as they look.
A modern take on classic Cantonese fare, Fei Jai is an intimate nook looks and feels nothing like a Chinese resto, but decked out in dark colours and dim lighting feels a lot more like a romantic Italian affair.
There’s no mistaking the food here though, and it’s an unmistakably authentic taste of Cantonese cuisine with dumplings like scallop and prawn, mushroom & spinach gow gee, and xiao long bao making for the perfect place to bring your date if you’re looking to impress them with an impeccable taste in restaurants.
The mushroom and spinach gow gee is a must-add to your Fei Jai order.
As one of the top foodie picks in Ashfield, Shanghai Night’s bright buzzy eatery carved a reputation for itself with its top-tier Chinese cuisine.
You’re in for a classic Chinese-style dining experience here with a no-frills interior and a comprehensive menu. Wear your stretchiest pants for a feast of pan-fried pork dumplings, chicken and shiitake mushroom dumplings, and soupy wontons and you’ll leave with a happy food coma knowing you’ve devoured some of the city’s best potstickers.
For the undecided, Dish Cult recommends the pork with chives garlic dumplings.
