According to culinary historian Allison Reynolds, the long-lasting Anzac biscuit was originally sent in care packages to our soldiers during World War I, which is why it’s named after the combined Australia and New Zealand Army Corps. From dipped in dark chocolate to rolled out so it’s super thin and crispy, around Anzac Day is when you will get the chance to try excellent traditional and not-so-traditional versions from some of these great Sydney bakeries.
It’s worth noting that many of these bakeries won’t be open on Anzac Day itself, so make sure you check opening hours before you go, order online or just get in early.
Newtown’s Flour Drum has taken the traditional chewy Anzac biscuit and half-dipped it in rich dark chocolate to create a delicious twist on the original.
You can get four in a sealed bag for $16. Also available will be Classic Anzac biscuits which sell for $4 each or grab a mini-six pack for $10.
Berkelo on the Northern Beaches is making a massive Anzac bikkie, and when we say massive we mean it. It’s as big as your head and weighs in at 300 grams!
The Giant Anzac biscuit is selling for $7 and can be bought online or picked up in-store. You will have to be quick though, they are only available until April 24.
“Traditional” is not a word that often goes before anything that Black Star Pastry bakes, but this year they are producing a traditional Anzac biscuit that’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.
The biscuits sell for $4.50 each or you can pick up a four-pack for $15. All profits from the sale of Black Star’s biscuits will go to the ANZAC appeal.
The crew at Bourke Street Bakery are going for a classic Anzac bikkie this year, but with a twist. Instead of the usual plump Anzacs, these have been flattened out. The result is a very thin, very crispy version.
The biscuits are selling for $4.40 each and will be available from Saturday 23rd April until Monday 25th April, unless they sell out beforehand.
You’ll find a generous sprinkling of coconut on top of Flour and Stone’s classic Anzac biscuits.
The Woolloomooloo bakery is selling them in bags of six which will set you back $24. Order online or in-store, but the team at Flour and Stone will not be working on Anzac Day itself, so get in early.
