There's something so cosy and heartwarming about biting into a toasted sandwich.
The initial crunch of the golden toasted bread, the mix of flavours swirling around inside, the oozing cheese that gets pulled apart at length – it’s all just so good. And as good as we think our ham & cheese toasties made in our own sandwich press are, toasties still follow the golden rule of all food: ‘Anything tastes better if someone else makes it for you’.
Toasties can be dressed up with fanciful ingredients and scientific combinations just as well as they can be perfected by using quality ingredients for classic recipes. The versatility is something we admire, which is why we’ve narrowed down the very best toasties you can go out and eat right now. Like right this second! We hope you enjoy these sandos as much as we do.
One of the most well-known toastie spots in Auckland, Cheese On Toast do one thing – and they do it well. The Mount Eden eatery features several different toasties, all served up on house-made sourdough with their signature three cheese blend and a side of pickles. Take your pick between their classic Just Cheese, Bacon Jam, Creamed Corn, Spaghetti, or Rump Steak. Each sandwich is stacked with unique (as well as local and seasonal) ingredients to make the ultimate flavours well worth the modest price tag.
Hero Sandwich House is absolutely a hero when it comes to toasted sandwiches. Creating stacked subs, Hero Sandwich House is always on the journey to creating the best sandwiches you can find in Auckland. There’s a toastie to suit every mood – from the classic Reuben we all know and love, to more adventurous flavours such as the Ralph, with charred gochujang chicken thigh, kewpie, cabbage, pickled ginger and cucumber. With two handy locations, you can get your fix in a matter of minutes.
An artisan sourdough bakery, Fort Greene takes the art of sandwich-making very seriously. Baking their bread daily, each sandwich is bursting with freshness, as well as ethically-sourced and seasonal produce. The menu is ever-changing, but our current highlights are the Kimchi Grilled Cheese with a 4-cheese blend and home-made kimchi, and the Cubano with Cuban-style free-range BBQ pork shoulder, pickles, cos lettuce, jalapeños, and Swiss cheese. Made lovingly by Liam & Andrea, the team behind Fort Greene, it’s well worth a stop by.
A modern take on the New York deli, Pastrami & Rye brings their delicious toastie greatness to the high street of Ellerslie. With house-cured and smoked Pastrami, bacon and salmon, homemade pickles & preserves, Pastrami & Rye go the extra mile to make everything that extra bit special. For $15, you can get yourself a classic Reuben served the New York-way with a side of crisps. Or branch out and try their Cuban, Crispy Chicken, Roast Beef French Dip (with dipping gravy!), Patty Melt with Scotch steak, or the Vegetarian with in-season veggies, cheese, and relish. The sandwiches are filled to the brim and taste best when ordered with a Coffee Supreme coffee on the side.
Last, but by no means least, Daily Bread comes through with their four to-die-for toasties that grace their menu. Select from the ‘Hot Sandwiches’ section of the menu and choose between their 3-cheese on sourdough, Goats Cheese & Mushroom, Eggplant with roasted capsicum, or their Porchetta with cream cheese. Of course the fillings are fantastic, but it’s really the bread that steals the show at Daily Bread. Using a long and slow fermenting process, with the best spray-free, organic ingredients available, the bread comes out packed with flavour and a heavily caramelised crust to enhance each bite. With six locations Auckland-wide, you’re never far from a bite of Daily Bread.
