Glasgow's best cheeseboards
Nothing really beats cheese and wine, does it? We know that socialising over a sumptuous cheeseboard is one of life’s greatest pleasures, so here’s a list of the best places to do so in Scotland’s most vibrant city. From sophisticated and intimate eateries, to chatty bars full of abundance, we’ve got you covered!
This super-cool hangout is probably most well-known for its juicy steaks, but there’s much more than meets the eye at Finnieston’s Porter & Rye. Order a cheeseboard from the late-night menu, select a glass of wine from the extensive list, and perch at the window for some serious people watching. With the late-night menu served until 1am, this is the perfect destination for a fun-filled Friday or Saturday night. The atmosphere is relaxed but vibrant and the staff are attentive. What’s not to like?
Vroni’s is probably most Glaswegians’ port of call for a cracking cheeseboard. Classic and refined – all dark wooden beams and dimmed lighting – the décor is inviting and cosy. You’ll instantly forget you’re in the middle of a city as you tuck into a decadent selection of cheeses (and perhaps a glass or two of wine). Celebrating Scottish cheeses and adorned with quince, oatcakes, chutney and grapes: at £15 per platter you’d be silly to miss this centrally located gem.
A decidedly more casual affair, Brel is not one for the faint hearted. Though the restaurant doesn’t offer up a traditional cheeseboard, the cheese fondues and raclettes will fulfil all of your cheesy dreams. Expect cascading 14-month-aged French raclette accompanied with soda bread, and your choice of meat and vegetables and melty fondues, complete with artisanal bread to dunk in. Despite the heavy affair, Brel still manages to be refined and sophisticated: for a night out with friends – and plenty of cheese – look no further.
Unique, but still homely and welcoming, Marchtown offers up some seriously stunning cheeseboards. A great place to meet friends and share a bottle of wine and cheese – the staff are always happy to talk and advise according to your specific tastes. The drinks menu is wide, as is the cheese selection, and the prices are really reasonable. The perfect destination for a catch up with a couple of friends or a romantic meal for two, Marchtown is truly a home from home.
Sat below the renowned Ubiquitous Chip, the Wee Chip is no less refined nor special. The atmosphere is lively and busy – with people coming in and out for quick drinks – but if you bag a seat, order the stellar cheeseboard which comes with Cranberry and Pistachio Crackers, Beremeal Biscuits and Onion Hazelnut Chutney. Considering the hefty prices of dishes in the main restaurant – for £10 for a three-cheese plate, The Wee Chip presents a real bargain.
