Dublin's best doughnuts

Who can say no to a delicious doughnut? Glazed, filled, topped, dunked — we’re not fussy, all doughnuts are welcome here! Happily for us, Dublin is home to an array of spectacular cafes and restaurants offering up both traditional and less conventional takes on the humble doughnut. Here are some of our faves.

The Hot Donut has been serving up handcrafted doughnuts in Dublin since 1979. The team is dedicated to using only the finest, locally sourced ingredients, and the bakers work throughout the night to ensure tip-top freshness. The options are extensive and the flavours are bold. Blueberry cheesecake doughnuts rub shoulders with guava-flavoured doughnuts, and there’s even a selection of savoury options, too! We love the Mediterranean Doughnut: filled with pesto and mozzarella, and topped with tomato and oregano, we guarantee that you won’t have sampled anything like it. Doughnuts for lunch? Sign us up!

Offbeat Donut Co was a long-sought after dream of baking duo Brian and Sandra O’Casey, and in 2016 that dream turned into reality when the team opened their first store in Westland Row. Fast forward to 2022, and Brian and Sandra are proud owners of eight Dublin-based doughnut stores, all of which serve up some of the finest sweet treats in the city. All Offbeat doughnuts are made on-site throughout the day, everyday, ensuring freshness and good quality. Recipes are created to allow customers to indulge in their favourite patisserie and dessert. From red velvet to lemon meringue pie flavour, the choices are mouthwatering. For the chocoholics amongst us, there’s a creamy hazelnut rocher-filled doughnut, a super-sweet Nutella ring, and our personal favourite, the happy hippo flavour! There are also plenty of vegan options, so no one will feel left out. A must-visit!

Las Tapas de Lola
cuisinesTapas, Spanish

Okay, we’ll admit it. You won’t find your typical jam-filled or glazed ring doughnuts here. But, what you will find, are the trendy Spanish counterparts – churros – which we reckon are equally good (if not better!). There’s no better spot to sample this European delicacy than at Las Tapas de Lola. Located in the heart of buzzing Wexford Street, this women-run restaurant offers sumptuous Spanish tapas, wines, beers, and tasty sangria! All of the desserts are made in-house, but it’s the churros that really stand out from the crowd. Served piping hot and encrusted in sugar, they’re accompanied by a rich and unctuous dark chocolate dipping sauce. The dough itself is light and crispy, and they’re never too oily. Say ‘hola’ to the doughnut’s cooler sister, and book yourself a table.

Located just outside Dublin City centre is Sonny’s, a family-run American diner. Savoury options include the likes of chicken wings, hot dogs, loaded burgers and tacos, and there’s a killer cocktail menu if you’re in the mood to celebrate. However, a visit to Sonny’s for the desserts alone is totally justifiable! Alongside waffle cones, DIY cheesecakes, and ice cream sandwiches, you’ll find a delectable selection of homemade doughnuts. Uncomplicated and unfussy, the options include a traditional glazed number, Oreo crumb, rainbow sprinkles, and sugar cinnamon. Here, simplicity works wonders and the paired-back toppings allow the doughnuts to shine. Soft and pillowy, you’ll be hard-pressed to stop at just one! But fear not. If you’re in the mood to indulge, we highly recommend the mini-donut platter, which includes a selection of all of the doughnut flavours and is served with a soft-serve ice cream dipping sauce. Yum!

Even the most ardent dairy-eaters will fall in love with these animal-friendly treats. Polish off your doughnut with one of V-Face’s vegan milkshakes and thank us later.
