The Great Manchester Run
On 26th September it’s the return of the biggest race in Manchester. Why should you watch? The Great Manchester Run and the many runners who participate support multiple charities, from The Christie to Macmillan Cancer Support. Meanwhile there are plenty of entertainment zones, for example the Beats Boost zone inspired by the Hacienda and the Hits Radio Motivation Zone whose purpose is to energise the runners and to keep the crowd lively. So why not go and support these runners (and hats off to you if you run the 10km or half). Here we have provided a list of places to eat and drink on the day for runners and supporters to make your day even better.
Delicious, cheap and healthy. Those are the three words that best sum up this café. Located in the famous Afflecks Arcade that has helped define the Northern Quarter for many years, this café serves great healthy dishes that are perfect before or after your run. For example, an all-day breakfast is only £3.70 and smoothies are £2.50. What’s more is that you can go and look at all the fantastic posters upstairs and other shops in Afflecks afterwards.
Box on the Docks sits in the heart of MediaCityUK in Salford and will be a fantastic place for friends, family and supporters to meet after watching the race as it loops back round in Salford to the city centre again. The garden is designed by independent artists, same with the colourful greenhouses, which you can book if it is rainy and chilly. However, the weather looks surprisingly decent for Manchester on that Sunday. This is a lovely spot to eat some street food and have a coffee at the bar and grill on the docks surrounded by the ITV and BBC buildings.
This little Italian joint is in a perfect location for dinner the day before or after the race as it is near plenty of hotels in Deansgate – the finish of the race. Cibo prides itself on delivering healthy and freshly made Neapolitan pasta and pizza, and indeed it does. A great place for a celebratory meal after the race.
Talking about celebrating, if we’d just finished running 10km we’d want a nice cold beer. There is no better place for that than Gullivers. Gullivers can be found in the Northern Quarter and has only recently reopened this summer. The staff are extremely friendly, the setting is very antique and the beer on offer is strong in quality. If you want to celebrate your achievement, this place should do the trick! You may even be able to catch some live music.
