A spotlight on Belfast's Roam

What was once just meant to be a one-off pop-up restaurant with the aim to create a unique dining experience, is now the spectacular establishment that is Roam. Found in Belfast’s city centre, Roam is a permanent fixture in the culinary landscape of the city, following the same ethos as their pop-up days: attentive but informal, simple but sophisticated. The fun-loving restaurant is a must-add to your Belfast dining bucket list.

Not just a restaurant, but an experience, Roam has blended all the most desirable dining features to culminate an unforgettable setting. Think warm, low lighting, ultra-comfy seats and intimate tables, a semi-open kitchen, and an elegant ambience while still remaining casual and relaxed. Attentive and passionate waitstaff will take care of you, and even elevate your meal with their extensive knowledge and genuine love for the food they’re bringing out. So, sink back into your seat and enjoy the gastronomic adventure.

Roam’s menu is the brainchild of Chef Ryan Jenkins. The self-taught young chef received a multitude of 5-star reviews for his Covid lockdown collection meals, and now graduated to the owner and creator of the award-winning restaurant.

Using the freshest and finest local produce, naturally the menu at Roam changes seasonally. The menu blends contemporary Irish and European flavours and techniques, to create classics with adventurous twists and modern touches. Though it’s impossible to say exactly what will be on the menu during your visit, you can expect to see the likes of stout & treacle bread with a whipped butter, gougères, or tuna in yuzus ponzu for nibbles to share, before getting started with citrus cured halibut, raw beef and black garlic on rye crackers, asparagus with yolk and hazelnut, and duck with spring onion dashi.

For mains, envision pollock and mussels with potato and smoked butter sauce, lamb rump with wild garlic, aged beef fillet with ox cheek and beef jus, monkfish and langoustines in lemon and chive, and celeriac with maitake in red wine. Each dish is delicately plated, paying careful attention to detail and the marriage of flavours.

End on a sweet note with one of Roam’s beautiful desserts – almost too gorgeous to tuck into. Think date pudding with an apple caramel and rum ice cream, blood orange polenta cake, and chocolate cremeux, with hazelnut, orange, cacao nibs, and caramelised milk ice cream. Or go for the Irish cheese plate to end on a milder note.

As for drinks, Roam has an exquisite choice of international wine and bespoke cocktails. Try on the Maritime Martini concocted of Copeland classic, regal red vermouth, chocolate, vanilla, and cherry, or the Atholl Brose with McConnells sherry cask, toasted oats, cinnamon, cream, and whites. Roam has a fantastic range of reds, whites, roses, and orange wines, including a lovely Teliani Kakhuri No8. Amber and Felurie from Château De Bellevue. If you’re struggling to decide, Roam’s friendly waitstaff will happily oblige in helping pick your perfect pairing.

Born out of a love for all things food, you can really feel the love in the air and in the dishes at Roam. Whether you’re looking for a memorable date night spot or wanting to make your next catch-up that little bit fancier, Roam is the place to indulge.

Open for lunch and dinner Wednesdays through Saturdays, you’ll want to book your table to secure a spot. You’ll find Roam at 6a Callendar Street, Belfast BT1 5HX.
