Mexican cuisine took Wellington by storm many years ago and, it’s safe to say it received a warm and long-lasting welcome.

Signature dishes like tacos, burritos and nachos are talked about with reverence; the vibrant, fresh and flavourful delicacies will always have a place in our hearts and stomachs.

If you’re craving the taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, and we mean the real deal, then you’ve come to the right place. Viva Mexico is a dining experience like no other. Antonio Gonzalez and David de Orta Jimenez (co-owners) were inspired by their Grandmother’s beloved family recipes. To honour their memory, they created Viva Mexico’s menu.

The sopa de tortilla already has a dedicated fan club that borders on obsession; the tomato-based corn tortilla soup is sonnet worthy. To experience everything Viva has to offer, dabble in a selección board of top-shelf tequila and mezcal. While we visit Viva for the gigantic portions and bottomless bottles of tequila, it’s the sense of community that resonates with us the most.

The Flying Burrito Brothers
cuisinesMexican

The Flying Burrito Brothers are a well-known name in the streets of Wellington; their taco and margarita game is legendary. The street-style tacos are made with soft flour tortillas; ladened with a hearty spread of your favourite filling from habanero spiced fried chicken to Pibil braised pulled pork.

The Flying Burrito is a lively and welcoming restaurant that sets the stage for thirsty Thursdays, weekend shenanigans and family dinners out. Explore the different varieties and styles of tequila with a tequila flight tasting board or stick to a naturally flavoured Jarritos Mexican soda. Finish your visit on a sweet note with a margarita milkshake (yes, please!) or take the edible route with the sugar-coated churros.

Los Banditos
cuisinesMexican

Dine beneath the watchful eye of Frida Kahlo, share tapas with the table and indulge in a variety of Mexican dishes at Los Banditos. Splash out on the heavenly selection of platos grandes; the carne asada platter comes with medium-rare premium ribeye, tomatillo salsa and a spread of chargrilled courgettes, guacamole, mixed greens and corn tortillas.

Start a love affair with agave; Los Banditos has an extensive range of yummy margaritas and exciting tequila-based cocktails like the mexi mai tai, which combines the smoky notes of mezcal, orgeat, passionfruit and pineapple. Leave the best to last; in the dessert section, you will find a dark chocolate mousse with a spiced twist, Pasilla Negra chilli and coconut ice cream.

El Culo Del Mundo
cuisinesMexican

In the heart of Wellington’s Mount Victoria, you will find a lively Latin-American restaurant; the delectable aroma will lure you through the doors of El Culo Del Mundo. Share the love with friends and family by ordering a selection of tapa-style dishes like the slow-cooked beef cheek tacos, mushroom gorditas and guacamole with corn chips – always a must-have when we dine on Mexican cuisine.

Try a non-alcoholic house-made drink inspired by Mexican street vendors, the horchata is cinnamon-infused rice milk or grab the bull by the horns with a mezcal negroni; you won’t regret it.

Rosie’s Red-Hot Cantina & Taco Joint
cuisinesMexican

Head down to Queen’s Wharf and hit up Wellington’s most notorious taco joint, Rosie’s Red-Hot Cantina & Taco Joint. Rosie was inspired by street food stalls from L.A to Baja Coast, Rosie’s menu combines the best of both worlds. Face your fears with the monster nachos; the generous portion could feed an army, loaded with chilli con carne, birria beef, melted cheese, jalapeños, and so much more.

Next up on our list is the cauliflower and coconut tacos served on white corn tortillas with a healthy dose of romesco and spice. Add an extra dash of hot sauce to spice things up. We love this spot for weekend catch-ups and one too many margaritas.
