A Bavarian Beer Hall in Glasgow
Bavaria is the largest state in Germany, a kingdom in its own right, that’s found in the south-east of the country. Home to mediaeval castles, quaint cobbled towns, grand palaces, Baroque churches, rousing music and beer halls, it has a laid-back vibe, with distinct food and drink.
If you’ve ever frequented a Bavarian Beer Hall in the great city of Munich, you’ll understand how unique and cheery an atmosphere it is. Teutophiles of Glasgow are lucky enough to have access to several German-themed bars and restaurants in the city centre, including this leading light – the Bavaria Brauhaus. It opened in 2015 and was inspired by one of the greatest beer halls of all time, the Hofbräuhaus, known as the cradle of Bavarian tavern culture.
Brauhaus Brass
In the mood for a little oom pah pah? Step inside the Bavaria Brauhaus, where the Brauhaus Brass band will regale you with traditional tunes. It’s guaranteed to get you swaying and foot-stomping with the stirring melodies. There’s nothing like music to create the immersion of a theme and this touch really makes the venue come to life in true Munich style. The local troupe of musicians play pop covers, brass style, as well as traditional German tunes.
The Big Six
There are six big breweries leading the drinking scene in Munich and at Bavaria Brauhaus, you can sink a pint from all of them, or order a flight to see which you prefer. They are Hofbräuhaus, Löwenbräu, Augustinerbräu, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr and Spaten-Franziskaner — all on draught. But that’s not all, there are many other German beverages on the menu. And as your servers wear traditional Bavarian dress, it feels like Oktoberfest year-round here.
Authentic Bavarian food
Bavarian cuisine is known to be hearty fare and Bavaria Brauhaus has a menu packed with authentic, delicious dishes. Many who come here haven’t tried this genre of food, so sharing platters are offered to provide a variety of items to sample. Bratwurst, currywurst, flammkuchen (a type of stone-baked Bavarian pizza topped with Gruyere cheese), schweinshaxe and the venue’s apple and raisin strudel are some top favourites. Or you can opt for regional dishes like Marktchampignons (pan-fried mushrooms in sherry cream, on toasted rye bread); Kartoffelsuppe (potato and winter vegetable soup, with bacon and sausage); Kasespatzle (Bavarian egg noodles, in gruyere and herb sauce, with crispy onion, salad and optional addition of Black Forest Ham); and Jagerschnitzel (breaded pork escalope, with a wild mushroom sauce and Bavarian potato salad).
Catering to all tastes
For diners preferring to stick with a selection that caters to exclusively British palates, there’s a range of burgers, bier battered fish ‘n chips, salad and roast chicken. And while German food features a lot of pork dishes, there are ample vegan alternatives on the menu here, so you can still enjoy a plant-based wurst and some of the venue’s classic sauces, without having to order any meat products.
Lively and sociable
The dramatic building housing Bavaria Brauhaus is A-listed, with a soaring ceiling featuring a huge Germanic mural, wood-panelled walls, brass fittings and vintage lighting. The seating is on two levels, with long wooden bench-style seats (with backs so you can lean and relax as the night unfolds) and tables for super social gatherings. And with a number of tables and chairs spilling out onto the venue’s front terrace, Bavaria Brauhaus is the perfect place to people-watch in the sunshine, beer in hand.
The venue is open from noon to 11pm Sunday to Wednesday and until midnight from Thursday to Saturday. Avoid the airport travel chaos this summer and experience a slice of Germany right here in Glasgow instead, by booking a day or night out at Bavaria Brauhaus. All that’s left to do is to relax, raise your bier glass and say a big ‘prost’ (cheers)!
