A spotlight on Padstow's Barnaby's at the Vineyard

Tucked away, down an old Cornish lane, you’ll find an old family-run vineyard; Trevibban Mill. Once home to a miller and his family, the land is now flush with vines, apple trees, and English Southdown sheep, and Barnaby’s, the sister restaurant to the beloved Prawn on the Lawn. Serving up seasonal plates, signature dishes, and tasty Cornish produce, Barnaby’s is worthy of a dedicated visit to Cornwall.

Barnaby's interior

Barnaby’s idyllic setting is a thing of dreams; lush green grass as far as the eye can see, strips of grape vines and apple orchards, a big wooden deck with sun umbrellas and family-style tables – and that’s just the outside!

Inside, Barnaby’s has an instant aura of relaxation. Earthy green tones and wooden accents all over, warm dim lighting, and cushioned rattan seats with sheepskin welcome you in, putting your nervous system straight into holiday mode. The smiles from the team are genuine, and you’re never made to feel unwanted. The bar is front and centre, ready to mix up your favourite tipple, while you can sneak peeks into the bustling kitchen for a behind-the-scenes look.

Barnaby's beer garden

Rarely you’ll find Barnaby’s anything short of packed, with families of all generations, friend groups celebrating, and quieter couples on a romantic trip. Sit in amongst the exciting chaos or head outside for a more tranquil table. Enjoy a sip in the sun when it comes out to play, and take in the stunning scenery Padstow has to offer.

The restaurant sits in the award-winning Trevibban Mill organic vineyard, opened in 2008 by Liz & Engin, the passionate couple behind the vines. Naturally, you must try a bottle of Trevibban Mill’s blends during your visit. Our top picks include the Pinot Noir Pink Sparkling, the 2021 Harlyn, and the Rock Rose, all of which go down a treat on a hot summer’s day.

If wine isn’t your thing, Barnaby’s has an extensive drinks list with the likes of green apple frozen margaritas, the classic Aperol spritz, Trevibban sage gimlet, magnolia flower martini, Trevibban Mill’s own brewed ciders, craft local beers, and plenty of non-alcoholic options including 0% cocktails and spirits, as well as the classic soft drinks and juices.

British food including seafood and small plates

Barnaby’s proudly supports a multitude of local personal producers and suppliers, including sourcing their seafood from Murt’s Shellfish, fifth-generation Padstow fisherman supplying the freshest crab and lobster from his day boat, their oysters from Porthilly Shellfish, a local oyster farm just across the way (you can see the oyster beds from Barnaby’s!), and their fruit, veg, and herbs from Ross at Padstow Kitchen Garden, a family farm less than a mile from Padstow. A lot of their producers drop in daily to deliver their goods, meaning you’re getting the absolute freshest ingredients every single time.

As for the menu, it changes with the seasons but sticks to a theme of celebrating the local area no matter the time of year. It’s all a la carte, with plates designed to share, as well as larger sharing platters available. Barnaby’s latest menus have featured deep-fried oysters with mojo verde and tajin, labneh and za’atar, crab with celeriac, kohlrabi, and almonds, mackerel with jalapeño, lime, and magnolia, confit duck leg served with khmeli suneli and plum sauce, and bass roti tostada with fermented cabbage, bronze fennel mayo.

Previous year’s standout dishes have included their famed pan-fried scallops, Lamb börek with saffron yoghurt, chilli oil (using lamb mince from Butterwell Farm in Cornwall), whole lobster with fermented chilli butter, harissa chicken with herb yoghurt, and their pork chop with lemon, garlic, and oregano. We know your mouth is watering!

You’ll want to save room for dessert too. Think orange filo cake with pistachio and crème fraîche, honey and ricotta Greek-style cake, baked cheesecake and boozy Metaxa prunes, and Pastel de Nata (Portuguese custard tarts).

Alongside serving up stunning food in a beautiful setting, Barnaby’s at the Vineyard is doing their part to run sustainably by working with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, adding a discretionary £1 donation to every restaurant bill – so you can feel good while dining out!

Whether you’re a local looking for a long lunch nearby, or you’ve got your sights set on a trip to the countryside of Cornwall, Barnaby’s is a surefire bucket list spot. Children are welcome, and Barnaby’s is dog-friendly (just let them know at the time of booking if you’re bringing your furry pal). Open Tuesday through to Saturday, you’ll find them at Trevibban Mill Vineyard Dark Lane Nr Padstow Cornwall PL27 7SE. Book your table here
