Pet-friendly bars and restaurants in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a haven for pet lovers, a tradition that dates right back to the 1800s and the tale of Greyfriar’s Bobby, a Skye Terrier who was awarded the Freedom of the City. These days it might be easier to ask, which places aren’t dog-friendly in Edinburgh, as there’s such a choice. But there are some that are especially welcoming — nay, encouraging, of your pooch or moggie. And they have some special treats on offer for your furry friends.

Larger four-legged creatures love smaller four-legged creatures, especially ones with bushy tails. So it stands to reason your pet would love a trip to Red Squirrel. One of the reasons the gastropub is so popular with owners (especially those with the kinds of smaller breeds who like to live in the lap of luxury) is that your dog can hop on your lap or on a seat. No having to lie on a cold hard floor while you enjoy a few drinks and a juicy burger.

Treat them to a puppuccino at Em’s Kitchen, a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice. The pretty pink venue in the Old Town is sandwiched between Canongate and Cowgate. It has brilliant midweek cocktail deals, fresh croissants daily, hearty meals and delicious sweet treats. Bring your pampered pooch and you’ll receive an extra special welcome from the dog-loving team.

Conceived by its Montrealer owner, Bross Bagels brings a taste of Canada (with a dash of New Yorker style) to its Edinburgh venues. There are now four cafes across the city in Bruntsfield, Stockbridge, Leith and Portobello, and not only are pups made most welcome, but you can also order your good boy or girl their very own bagel, loaded with cheese and karnautzel sausage.

Craft ales and classic Scottish fare await human patrons at The Caley Sample Room. However, canine visitors can tuck into Pedigree Biscrock Milky Biscuits and Vitacrat Beef Sticks (both provided for free) and you can buy them a dish of Snuffle Dog Beer from the bar. There are sports fixtures on the big screen and quiz nights — your sidekick may not be able to give you any of the answers, but they’ll provide excellent company while you work your grey matter. And as doggie-favourites Harrison Park and the Union Canal are just a short trot away, you can combine your visit with a scenic walk.
