The best fried chicken in Liverpool
If you’re a self-proclaimed fried chicken connoisseur looking for the perfect crunchy chicken (Scouse pronunciation only) dish in Liverpool, look no further as these spots serve up some of the best golden crunchy scran in the city.
When you think of fried chicken and Liverpool, the first thing that springs to mind should be Pattersons, which is known for its famous fried chicken, good tunes and belter cocktails. The secret to this mouthwatering fried chicken is that the chicken is brined in Patterson’s special herbs and spices mix for over 24 hours, then soaked in buttermilk for an hour and dusted with the secret recipe flour. This recipe was developed 40 years ago in a chicken shop on Liverpool’s Gladwell Street by two Scousers with an obsession for American food, and the same secrets are still used today.
Depending how hungry you are, you can order 250g of Pattersons crunchy chicken as a light snack, or go all out and try 1kg of fried chicken with not one, but two large sides! Pattersons offers a range of specially-made sides, including onion rings, hash browns, charred corn, slaw, the famous gravy or Patt’s gravy.
For all the burger lovers out there, you need to try Pattersons Stack Attack filled with two pieces of fried chicken, American cheese, smoked applewood, gem lettuce, honey sriracha and Patt’s gravy. If you prefer some extra heat, then you will love the Firecracker Double Stack with spiced fried chicken, jalapeños, baby gem lettuce, reaper hot sauce and chilli cheese all served on a delicious glazed brioche bun.
To enjoy the crunchy goodness at Pattersons, visit the O.G headquarters in Gladwell Street or head down to the Baltic Market where Pattersons has its very own stall every week.
The American-inspired Free State Kitchen is a must-visit if you are on the hunt for the crunchy goods. From looking at the menu, you will notice that there’s actually only one fried chicken dish, however there are also plenty of fried chicken specials, which are always changing.
There is one burger at FSK that is always available and that is the Buffalo Fried Chicken Burger – a must-have that will make your mouth water for days just dreaming about it. The burger is served on a brioche bun, which is stuffed with lip-smacking buttermilk fried chicken thigh, Frank’s hot sauce, mayo, American cheese and tomato. For extra crunchy goodness, you can add an extra piece of fried chicken or even some bacon for added flavour.
The burger also comes with a side of fresh cut Rosemary salted fries, and you can choose from extra sides if you are feeling extra hungry. You can add a bit of cheesy greens with the wedge salad, which is a crispy iceberg lettuce topped with blue cheese, walnuts, parsley and garlic croutons or for a carb overload why not pick the mac’n’cheese or the buttermilk-coated onion rings?
One of the best things about enjoying a fried chicken feast at FSK is that it’s mindful of food intolerances. The brioche buns, for example, are gluten-free and the chips are actually allergen free and only cooked in vegetable oil. There’s also a range of dairy-free alternatives, so you can enjoy your favourite food without worrying about any flair ups.
For a wide selection of fried chicken goodness, head to the Red Dog Saloon and order from the Louie’s Hot Chicken menu, with a range of Nashville, Tennessee specialties. On the menu you will find various dishes with the same delicious cayenne pepper and brown sugar marinated fried chicken recipe. You can also choose a heat level, so depending on your tolerance for spice you can enjoy your favourite food at traditional, mild, hot or x-hot.
At the Red Dog Saloon, you can enjoy various fried chicken plates all served with bread, homemade dill pickles and Louie’s special sauce. One of the top plates is the Hot Chicken and French Toast, which includes your choice of chicken, with a side of French toast, maple syrup and butter. Another favourite is the Tenders, which includes three jumbo fried chicken tenders, slaw and fry or ranch sauce.
If you fancy a burger, you’re in for a treat, as Louie’s menu has six different fried chicken burgers that are to die for. If you can’t get enough of BBQ sauce, you should definitely go for the KC special, which is filled with boneless chicken thigh, bourbon peach BBQ sauce, applewood smoked bacon and American cheese.
