Where to get your freakshake fix

It’s well documented that Liverpool has undergone something of a freakshake revolution over the last couple of years. These seriously jazzed-up milkshakes feature lashings of ice-cream, mounds of syrupy sauces, and all come topped with cakes, biscuits, doughnuts — you name it! This city is overflowing with places to get your sugary fix, but we’ve made it easy for you, and rounded up Liverpool’s top freakshake spots.

Looking for a more grown-up version of the sweet freakshake? Then place an order with Treaty Pie, where you’ll find boozy milkshake concoctions aplenty! There’s the ‘nuts about bailey’s’ shake – a mashup of Reece’s cups, Baileys, and chocolate sauce – as well as the ‘smooth jack’ – filled with salted caramel, caramel sauce, Jack Daniels, and finished with more salted caramel and gold stars.

Koop specialises in three classics — chicken, burgers, and shakes. So, if you’re looking for something savoury to off-set your sugary freakshake, then look no further. As far as the freakshakes go, options are endless: go all out and try the ‘dodger’, a Jammie dodger and strawberry flavoured milkshake, or even the ‘mars attack’, a chocolate milkshake loaded with caramel and topped with chunks of mars bar! Looking for something slightly healthier? There’s a range of vanilla protein freakshakes (including a super food blend, complete with dates almonds and chia seeds), for those wanting to temper an inevitable sugar crash. If none of that tickles your fancy, Koop also allows you to create your own freakshake – simply start with your choice of homemade soft ice cream, and then go crazy with the toppings. At only 70p per add-on, this one’s a real steal.

TGI Fridays
cuisinesAmerican

No shake guide is truly complete without reference to TGI Fridays. This family-friendly American diner is perfect for those wanting to treat the kids to something sweet. Their shakes are perhaps more modest than others – the base isn’t too thick, and they come served with just one topping (whipped cream). Don’t let that put you off, however. These freakshakes are intensely flavoured, and there’s nothing artificially sweet about them. The chocolate variety is dark and velvety, and the strawberry is as fresh as a freakshake can get. Plus, they’re only £4.25 each, a complete steal.

For a freakshake with a difference, try Sblended, which alongside standard ice cream-based shakes, specialises in frozen yoghurt-based drinks. Don’t fret though, you won’t leave here feeling deprived. Topping options include almost all chocolate bars (Snickers, Maltesers, Magic Stars, Minstrels) as well as sweets (Skittles, Smarties, jelly tots, hundreds and thousands), and several different sauces (butterscotch, caramel, strawberry). There’s a ‘shake of the day’ on offer every Monday to Friday, and a student discount available for those with a valid ID.

Red Dog Saloon
cuisinesAmerican, BBQ and Grill

This restaurant celebrates all things American. Coupled with some seriously tasty barbeque dishes (their smokers have all been imported from the US!), sit a handful of intensely decadent freakshakes, not made for the fainthearted. There may only be five flavours to choose from – vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, triple choc brownie, and salted fudge cookie – but rest assured they all taste out of this world. Why not go one step further and add a shot of malt (£1), whiskey, or Baileys (£3.25)? Pair your shake with some BBQ-smoked meat or Nashville-style fried chicken and thank us later!

Midnight Delivery at Baltic Market
cuisinesDessert

Midnight delivery has a home in the Baltic Market or their own shop on Smithdown Road – they also have delivery options meaning your next freak shake is just a few clicks away! They make all of their shakes with 1 pint of fresh whippy ice cream, blended down to perfection with various toppings of your choice. You can choose as many flavour combinations as you like including Biscoff, Nutella or Oreo or, if you’re feeling adventurous, they also have Jammy Dodger, Chocolate Fudge Cake, Daim and Terry’s Chocolate Orange flavours.

Archie’s is conveniently located right next to Liverpool Central station – so whether you want a sugar rush before, during or after your wild weekend, there’s a freakshake place for you right in the center of town. You can choose between the classic shakes such as Banana or Lotus Biscoff or you can indulge even more in their ‘Celebrity Shakes’ which include the Billionaire and the Million Dollar – both include a delicious mix of flavours and won’t break the bank, a regular size is £5.99 while the large is only £6.99.

Free State Kitchen is renowned for their burgers and ‘American diner’ vibe so it should come as no surprise that they nail the freak shake vibe too! You can choose from two mighty flavours: Chocolate and peanut butter (our personal fave) or Lotus Biscoff and raspberry (think raspberry ripple!). If you want to grab yourself one of these, you’d best be quick, they are only open Wednesday-Sunday so don’t forget to book!
