Liverpool has everything you need from beaches to nightlife and historical culture, this city has it all! Give this guide a read for a round-up of the best places to visit if you’re planning a staycation in or around Liverpool.
The Jug and Bottle is a beautiful pub with nine en-suite guest bedrooms upstairs, making this an ideal base for your staycation. Located within walking distance of Thurstaston Beach on the Wirral, it’s the other side of the Mersey River, which offers an escape from the bustling city centre and gives you the opportunity to explore plenty of walks in nature, away from the crowds. The delicious homemade menu includes a number of all time favourite pub classics in a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Your four legged friends are also welcome! Don’t forget to book your table as this popular pub gets very busy, especially on a sunny day.
The Fox & Hounds is a traditional country pub nestled in the conservation area of Barnston on the Wirral. This is the perfect location if you enjoy walking on your staycations. It stocks a cracking range of local cask ales, lagers and ciders, as well as a hearty homemade menu. Wholesome pub classics make up much of the menu, including 8oz locally sourced ribeye steak, honey roasted belly pork with caramelised shallots and chestnut and button mushroom stroganoff. The menu is huge, including a variety of starters, light bites, mains and desserts.
The Book offers fresh handmade pizzas, cooked in a stone bake oven, as well as a wide variety of small plates and salads. It’s located in West Derby, which is very close to lovely walks around Croxteth Hall and Country Park. It wouldn’t be a staycation without a few drinks and The Book offers an excellent selection, with a bespoke cocktail menu and over 40 gins, including the West Derby Gin, as well as a selection of excellent wines and world beers.
Nestled in the cultural hub of the Royal Albert Dock, Madre is the perfect place to sip on some cocktails and enjoy authentic Mexican food before setting off on a tour of one of Liverpool’s most iconic cultural spots. You can get everything from fish tacos with jalapeño aioli, to a range of delicious margaritas like the spicy but sweet verde margarita on the rocks with jalapeño and pineapple, and the classic frozen margarita – what’s not to love? Enjoy the sounds of Grooveyard, who bring all the sunshine music vibes to Madre’s courtyard from May onwards. This venue is constantly busy, so don’t miss out and book your table now.

Love Lane Brewery is based in the heart of Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle, voted the “coolest” district in the UK. These guys are keeping the city’s proud brewing heritage alive, so if craft beer is your bag, look no further! In 2016, the renovation began turning the old rubber factory into an 18,000 Hectolitre Brewery, capable of brewing 3.2 million pints! You can now book a beer tour, which is an hour long and includes a guided tour of the brewery, a tasting of three beers and a pint of lager, pale or session to finish. Why not follow the beer tour with a trip to the world-famous Anglican Cathedral, which is just a short walk away?

The Quarter has been family-run since its opening in 2003, and this shines through in the service, food and atmosphere. A buzzy, vibrant restaurant and café, set amongst the cobbled streets of Liverpool’s Georgian Quarter, it is steeped in history. Being a family-owned business, naturally it’s the perfect location for you and your family to visit during your staycation. Located on Falkner Street, it’s near the Anglican Cathedral – the biggest cathedral in England and the fifth biggest in Europe. The menu caters to everyone, serving a range of pizza, pasta, grilled meats and salads, so there is something to suit everyone and all for around £12 to £15 per dish.
This dark, moody and atmospheric disco bar may not look much from the outside, especially since the sign outside reads “Jenny’s Seafood Restaurant”, which was its former home, but it promises great music, great drinks and friendly staff. Open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, you can boogie here until the music stops and then continue the party in one of Liverpool’s late-night clubs. It serves a selection of wines, bottled craft beers and amazing cocktails like the Fruit Salad Highball. Intrigued? You can book onto one of the booth packages and enjoy a night of dancing and drinking! This is a great spot if you’re looking to get an authentic Liverpool nightlife experience on your staycation.

Find the rusty wheelbarrow and you’ll find Little Hardware. This speakeasy is really special – as you walk down a dimly-lit corridor, you’ll be greeted with a locked door. You’ll need to knock before you’re allowed into the cosy bar, lit with candles and dedicated with an homage to its past of being a hardware store. Expect unique cocktails that you won’t find anywhere else for a truly unique staycation experience.
Crust has been awarded the Best Pizza in the UK at the Italian Awards in 2019, so we know you’ll be in great hands when visiting this prestigious restaurant. Crust has restaurants on Bold Street in the city centre and Allerton Road inWoolton so no matter where you’re staying on your staycation, there is never a Crust far away. This also says a lot about how amazing the food is – one restaurant just wasn’t enough! Alongside the classic and tasty pizzas, there’s also amazing and fresh pasta dishes, most of which are all under £10 making it an affordable option if you’re feeding a family. And the portion sizes are more than enough to take a doggy-bag home for the next day!
LEAF on Bold Street has a lovely spot to watch the world go by; whether you want tea and cake or something more savoury, this place has a great menu for big and little kids. It serves a kid’s brunch menu or a two-course lunch/dinner menu for only £8.50. Both come with free colouring in sheets and pencils to keep the children entertained while you relax. There’s also a restaurant on Allerton Road, so if you’re staying in South Liverpool, you can experience LEAF without going into the city centre.
