Spotlight on The Old School House in Liverpool
Local Liverpudlians will be familiar with The Old School House’s staple location in the heart of Lark Lane. For anyone not so familiar with the area, this is a bustling street full of independent and local bars, restaurants and takeaways, just a stone’s throw away from the iconic Sefton Park. The Old School House’s stunning outdoor space includes heaters, a conservatory with large screen TVs and flowering plants which attract a wide range of visitors, especially in the summer. This now trendy eatery and bar has been converted from the former 19th-century Christchurch school, hence its name.
The menu is far from old-school
Despite the name, the menu is far from old-school. In fact, The Old School House is a mixture between a relaxed pub with TVs showing sport and a lively dining area with a classy restaurant vibe. It specialises in wild sourdough, beer breads, pretzels, focaccia, and wood-fired pizza and the pan-European brasserie menu is available from brunch to lunch to dinner. You can watch the chefs make the pizza from scratch in the wood-fired pizza oven from the main bar and dining area too, which adds to its homely feeling.
If you just want to pop in for a smaller bite of brunch and coffee, these treats are available every day until 2pm on weekdays and 1pm on weekends, with roasts served on Sundays.
If you’re a major foodie, the menu is not just about the amazing breads. You’ll also find hearty, classic pub food but with its own classy flair. And here it is no ordinary steak and kidney pie. It’s locally sourced steak served with the best sweet potato mash you would have ever tasted. Aside from the pub classics, there’s also a range of grilled meat and fish, including tiger prawns and a seabass dish with pesto and veggies. Delicious!
Fear not if you’re a vegan or vegetarian, this menu also caters for you without losing any of its spark. You can choose from a chimichurri cauliflower steak or a hearty vegan pie to name just two.
From beer bread to craft beer
The Old School House takes its beer seriously. In the cellar, it has a range of rotating cask ales and dozens of European craft ales on draught. If wine is your tipple of choice, it also prides itself on working with interesting local wine suppliers on a list with diversity and the cocktail menu is based around some great spirits and ingredients that include rums from the Caribbean and vodka from Poland.
The extensive drinks menu is around six pages long with an emphasis on cocktails that sit at around the £9 mark. You’ll find names linking back to the “School House”; Detention, Hopscotch, Piggle In The Middle, Blind Man’s Buff and Pocketful of Posies are all suitably educational. There’s also a wide variety of spirits, including gins (of course), so you will need to take a few moments to flick through the menu and make your decision because you’re well and truly spoiled for choice.
Location, location, location
The team behind The Old School House have paid close attention to detail, with decor boasting exposed brick walls, a large feature roof lantern above the bar area, classy white tiles, rustic shelving, industrial lighting and a decent display of bottles artfully arranged as a focal point. There’s also an extension to the former restaurant, next to bi-folding doors, which give way onto a large outdoor terrace.
