Glasgow's best toastie spots

This versatile lunch/brunch food is international and timeless in its appeal. A simply toasted or grilled sandwich is known by various names in different parts of the world, such as grilled cheese, the croque monsieur, a panini, or, more commonly in the UK, the toastie. If you’re in search of the tastiest of them all, from the plain to the most unexpected fillings, here’s where to go in Glasgow for your toastie.

Choose from the deli sandwich selection here: the classic BLT, halloumi red pepper and chipotle ketchup, avocado cream cheese and hot smoked salmon, or falafel and hummus. Each comes on chunky bread, with grill lines from the toastie maker and a fresh colourful dollop of side salad. These are served on the venue’s rustic earthenware for additional rustic-chic flair.

Sit inside the nautical cafe at one of the wooden tables, or on the cobblestone street outside, overlooking the canal. Ocho’s location makes it quite the hidden gem and offers a unique outlook.

If you’ve tried all the usual toastie spot and are in search of something new and different, pop into The Skillet, Hyndland’s latest haunt for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The continental toasties here have an Italian taste, made using warm rosemary focaccia and with fillings inspired by various parts of Europe.

Try chicken schnitzel with salad, cheese, bacon and spiced mayo; pulled lamb and minted yoghurt; or a vegan goats cheese, beetroot hummus, pickled red onion and rocket toastie. Add some fries or soup for a heartier lunch. The bare red brick walls give this an almost new York feel to the cosy spot. Focaccia toasties are available Wednesday to Sunday, 12 noon to 4.30 pm.

Nic’s NYC Deli
cuisinesDeli, Bakehouse

Craving a Big Apple-style toasted sarnie? Swing by Nic’s on Byres Road. Their manwich is piled high with ham, wafer-thin pastrami, roast chicken, Monterey jack cheese and sriracha mayo. And there are lots of other quirky creations to bite into, like the Vietnamese Chicken Twerker, the Heart Stopper, the Triple Bypass, the Smokin Cuban’ and the Kiki Bouba Po Boy.

A few years back the eatery hosted a huge cheese toastie challenge for National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. The dish, specially made just for the event, contained eight layers of mild red, mature and extra mature cheddars, sweet fried onion and pulled pork, separated by sourdough and Italian style breads. Nic’s is a fantastic and filling lunch stop for those working in the West End.

St Luke’s and The Winged Ox
cuisinesAmerican, BBQ and Grill

All of the toasties here are made using sourdough and are meal-like, served with a portion of shoestring fries. Meat lovers can get one with tender onglet steak cooked medium rare, house-spiced straw spuds, crunchy red onion, chipotle mayo and chimichurri. There’s also a classic club sarnie and a HLT (halloumi lettuce and tomato). We also once spotted a mac and cheese and bacon toastie on the specials menus here, the perfect pick me up when you need something carby and hearty on a cold day. Add some sides like frickles, jalapeno olives or chipotle coleslaw to spice things up even further.
