Brasserie Prince at The Balmoral

The Balmoral is one of Edinburgh’s most famous hotels and its restaurant, Brasserie Prince, is equally impressive. With a focus on classic French cuisine, the menu here is sure to impress even the most discerning diner. Real highlights include the seafood bouillabaisse and steak tartare (served with watercress mayonnaise, sourdough, and fries). But what really sets this venue apart is its historic ties to the Royal Family – the hotel’s clock tower is said to have been set three minutes fast to ensure guests wouldn’t miss their trains, and it’s rumoured that the Queen herself has stayed here on more than one occasion.

For a more relaxed dining experience, head to Whiski Bar & Restaurant on the (aptly named) Royal Mile. This cosy spot serves up classic Scottish dishes, including haggis, Cullen skink, and fish and chips.  The real star of the show here is the whisky selection – with over 300 varieties on offer, it’s the perfect place to indulge in Scotland’s national drink. Plus, with live music every night, you’re sure to have a fun and lively evening.

Located in the charming village of Duddingston, just a short drive from the city centre, the Sheep Heid Inn is an historic pub that’s played host to many a royal visitor over the years. The pub dates back to the 14th century and is said to have been a favourite of Mary, Queen of Scots. Today, it serves up hearty pub fare and has a large beer garden – perfect for enjoying a pint on a sunny day. We love the decadent beef brisket and double Gloucester cheese pie, and no visit is complete without sampling the homemade pavlova, complete with white chocolate, raspberry meringue, freshly whipped cream, blackcurrant sauce, lime and berries – it’s a real showstopper!

Another historic pub with ties to the Royal Family, The King’s Wark has been serving up food and drink since 1438. Located on the waterfront in Leith, it’s the perfect spot to soak up Edinburgh’s maritime history. The menu features classic Scottish dishes, including Cullen skink and haggis, as well as more contemporary options like seared scallops and wild mushroom risotto. Plus, with a great selection of local beers and ales, it’s an ideal spot to kick back and watch the coronation.
