Dublin's got some real corkers
Looking for the perfect destination for a cosy date night? Perhaps you’re hoping to catch-up with a friend over a glass of something refreshing? Or maybe you simply need somewhere to unwind after a trying day at work! Happily, we’ve rounded up Dublin’s finest wine bars, to suit all of your needs.
Unpretentious and cosy, Piglet is the perfect place to relax over a tasty glass of wine. The bar offers up tempting ‘tapa’ (Prawn Pil Pil on top of homemade Focaccia, Chorizo and Confit Duck Gizzard with Garlic Bread Soldiers to name just a few) alongside an expertly curated wine list. Expect your usual suspects – Picpoul de Pinet, Muscadet, Sauvingnon Blanc – alongside some more unusual numbers (we particularly enjoyed their Austrian Zweigelt-Pinot Noir). The service staff are friendly and helpful, and you never feel rushed – definitely not one to miss.
Looking for a wine bar with a difference? Then head to Amy Austin’s, where you’ll be greeted with “wine on tap” and a super lively atmosphere to boot. No one is trying too hard here; the service staff aren’t pretentious or pushy and the décor is simple but sophisticated. That’s not to say, of course, that the food and drink is prepared without thought. The small plates (only €23 for two plates, Monday and Tuesday) are exquisite – every bite a tasty morsel – and the wine selection is both eclectic and crowd-pleasing.
There’s something exceedingly charming about ‘La Cave’ – a rustic French wine bar located in Dublin’s centre. Is it the kitsch red tablecloths or the tiny wooden bread baskets? Maybe it’s the charming French waiters? All we know is that there’s nothing not to love. Beyond the traditionally French-looking interiors (think dim-lighting, rows upon rows of wine bottles, and tables laden with candle sticks) you’ll find an abundance of lip-smacking food and delectable wines. Though French wines make up most of the menu, you’ll also be welcome to sample some of their New World varieties – they’ve got bottles from Croatia through to Uruguay! Prices are extremely reasonable – a two-course lunch menu will set you back only €17 – and the staff are extremely attentive.
No Dublin wine guide is complete without a mention of 64 Wine. Attempting to replicate a certain European café culture, this sophisticated wine bar offers up an array of small snacks and plates as well as sharing boards, throughout the day into the evening. From classic wines, fine wines and organic wines to natural and biodynamic wines – there’s something to please all palates. Their expert staff are happy to advise and navigate you through their extensive menu. Order their Charcuterie and Cheese plate with your wine of choice and relax into the cool, chic surroundings.
