Liverpool's must-visit vegan-friendly restaurants

Are you searching for vegan-friendly joints in Liverpool? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Whether you follow a completely plant-based diet or opt for meat-free Monday, you certainly won’t find yourself going hungry in Liverpool. Being a vegan in the city can be amazing as there are so many places you can go and try out. The vegan movement is rapidly growing, along with peoples attitudes, and menus everywhere are being adapted. Liverpool’s vegan restaurants are full of flavour and natural goodness. Whether that be for brunch, a light snack or a cheat day dinner, they’ve got something for everyone. Here’s a roundup of Liverpool’s must-visit vegan-friendly restaurants.

Hafla Hafla
cuisinesMiddle Eastern, Small Plates, Vegan Friendly

This Middle Eastern inspired street food joint is definitely one not to miss. These guys use local ingredients where possible and their menu features weekly specials. Vegan-friendly mezze options include house hummus and pitta, smoked chilli babaganoush and pitta, roast cauliflower, crispy fried mushrooms and Hafla spiced rice, which has a nice little kick to it. You must try the pitta! The team has a bit of a reputation for them. They’re freshly baked in-house and the smell alone is enough to lure you in. When it comes to the kebabs, the pick of the bunch is definitely the house falafel with hummus and tahini.

Down The Hatch is a local favourite amongst vegetarians and vegans as it provides its own take on junk food. This includes things like loaded fries, hotdogs and burgers. The menu’s 80% vegan. No meat is in sight in the basement restaurant, but even meat eaters can enjoy this tasty food. It’s junk food, but with slightly less guilt! All food is home-cooked and there’s no where else in the city like it. You’ll probably need a nap after indulging in the goodness and no one will judge because they’ll be feeling it too.

The Egg Café
cuisinesVegetarian Cafe, Vegan Friendly

This is an award-winning vegetarian and vegan café right in the heart of Liverpool and was one of the first places dedicated to meat-free food in the city. The Egg Cafe provides classic options such as soups, cakes, burgers and salads in a bohemian, laid back-style loft just off the popular Bold street in a listed building. On a Sunday it offers a complete vegan roast dinner – how delicious does that sound!

Mowgli
cuisinesIndian, Street Food, Vegan Friendly

What a success story Mowgli is in Liverpool. It’s an Indian street food establishment that’s taken the local curry scene by surprise with not just one venue but two. The flagship store resides on Bold Street with a bigger venue by the town hall in Liverpool. Mowgli offers a menu with vegan classics such as tiffin boxes and street food varieties. You must try the Holy Chow and Mowgli Chip Butty when you’re here, stuff of legends.

The Caledonia is a well-known legendary pub based in the stunning Georgian Quarter that people have been visiting for many years. Not so long ago it decided to change its entire menu and go completely vegan. This includes vegan beers, cookie sandwiches and much more. We think the vegan burgers might just be the best around. You’ll have to try one for yourself to appreciate how good they really are.

If you fancy dinner with a view and Liverpool’s famous docks either side of you, head to Nova Scotia in Mann Island. This place pays tribute to Liverpool’s now forgotten Nova Scotia district, which played a significant part in Liverpool’s maritime history. The name was given after the close ties with the Canadian province, which actually has its very own River Mersey.

The venue serves up a delicious vegan brekkie with maple (a tribute to its Canadian ties) and mustard vegan sausages, crispy potato hash, smashed avocado and delicious roasted veg with sourdough toast. If you’re heading there in the evening, you should try the veggie scouse with a side of warm crust bread or the Lusitania burger with a Moving Mountains patty served on a vegan brioche bun with a side of beer battered onion rings.

If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, you will love Bundobust on Bold Street. This place is known for its authentic Indian street food, including plenty of vegan options like the Bhel Puri, a classic Mumbai street snack made up of broken samosa pastry and puffed rice in a sweet tamarind chutney.
