Where to celebrate any occasion in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is full of great – and varied – dining destinations, so if you’re looking to celebrate, there’s really no better city! Whether you’re looking for the perfect romantic spot to celebrate with your partner, somewhere that caters for big groups, or simply somewhere that delivers both on style and substance, then look no further. The hardest decision will be where to pick, but we’ve narrowed it down to five fantastic options for you.

The Kitchin
cuisinesFine Dining, Scottish, Michelin Starred

Perhaps the most famous restaurant in the city, The Kitchin has been awarded not only its own Michelin star, but also voted ‘Best Restaurant Experience in the UK’. Located on the beautiful Leith waterfront, and complete with pretty al fresco dining, this restaurant is the perfect destination for a celebration. The food is simple but refined and perfectly executed. As you would expect in Scotland, there’s a big focus on meat, but vegetarians fear not, there’s both a vegetarian tasting and lunch menu available. Leave room from dessert where you’ll be greeted with some seriously good pastry skills; the Salted Caramel Mousse with poached Perthshire pear is reason enough to visit.

The Witchery by the Castle
cuisinesFine Dining, Scottish
Fine dining dish with red wine

Certainly winning the award for the most opulent restaurant to celebrate, The Witchery smacks of old-school glamour. Sat amongst the dramatic gothic décor (think dark oak panelling, long candles and arched French windows), you’ll feel positively regal as you tuck into your meal. The afternoon tea here is brilliant, but the set lunch and à la carte menus are not to be missed; lean into the decadence and order the Lobster Omelette or the North Atlantic halibut, which comes with confit lemon and crispy potato. The service is slick and friendly, so if you’re booking it for a special occasion, there’s nowhere more lavish.

If you are looking for something a bit more low-key, but by no means less special, head to Paul Kitching’s 21212. Located inside a boutique hotel, the food at Kitching’s restaurant is designed to excite and intrigue. The menu changes each week, but dishes are always fresh and there’s a real emphasis on local produce. The dining room is small and intimate, and each of the tables are adorned with smart white tablecloths. A quiet and relaxed atmosphere, 21212 is the perfect destination for a romantic evening for two.

Rhubarb
cuisinesFine Dining, Vegan Friendly

Tucked away in Prestonfield, there are very few people who have not heard of James Thompson’s fine dining restaurant, Rhubarb. Located in 20 acres of gorgeous grounds – where peacocks and cattle roam free – you’ll feel a million miles away from the busy hub of the inner city. Never fear, though, you’re only five minutes from the city centre, making it the perfect destination for a big celebration. Vegans rejoice, there is an entire menu dedicated to vegan food, with highlights including Roast Aubergine Wellington and Pickled Watermelon with marinated vegan feta. Visit for the beautiful location and stay for the relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff.

The Lookout
cuisinesBritish, Seasonal

Last – but certainly not least – is The Lookout, located right on top of Calton Hill. Here you’ll be greeted with panoramic city views, where you can eat and drink whilst gazing out of the floor-to-ceiling windows. Get a taxi to take you to the top if you feel like arriving in style, or alternatively soak-up the breathtaking views as you make your own way up. At lunchtime you’ll find a short à la carte menu, made up of fresh and punchy dishes. If you really want to experience something special, book a table for early evening where you’ll get to see the sun setting.
