An Eastern European feast awaits. Polish people account for the highest number of non-British nationals in the UK. It therefore doesn’t come as a surprise to learn that there are restaurants that offer traditional Polish cuisine, although it still remains a niche. Even though its appeal isn’t as widespread as other cultures, it definitely deserves more attention than it gets. From dumplings to soups and cabbage dishes, Polish food will capture your heart with homely recipes and generous portion sizes. Our guide will introduce you to the best places for Polish cuisine in London.
The interior of Mamuśka! attracts with the colourful ceiling and chilled vibe, which might be the reason you’ve heard of this venue. Part of the casual vibe is the way it operates; you can order the food at the counter and wait for a staff member to bring it to your table. What you don’t know is that the restaurant is stylised as bar mleczny (milk bar), which is a popular Polish cafeteria. Just like the interior, the food is deserving of its fanbase. You can grab a generously sized portion of Russian dumplings stuffed with potatoes and white cheese, and drizzled with onions. Come for the design, stay for the food.
Ognisko sets restaurant standards high with its luxurious and bright white interior. The menu really delivers when it comes to food – you can enjoy a variety of Polish starters, main dishes and desserts. For starters we recommend sour cucumber soup with vegetables and linseed oil, marinated herring with onion and potatoes, which is traditionally enjoyed with cold vodka. For the main dish, your best bet will be potato pancakes – delicious and filling. After the meal, you can head to a bar where you can try the legendary Polish vodka. It’s strong so don’t forget to fill your belly first.
Autograf’s setting is modest but the selection of dishes is vast. On the starters menu you’ll find plates such as fried sausage with onion and pepper, Polish sour soup, fried dumplings with sour cabbage and mushrooms. The main menu boasts delicacies such as breaded chicken with potatoes and goulash. There’s a great selection of savoury and sweet potato pancakes and the pancakes with plum jam are a must-try. If you want something slightly different, try the sweet dumplings filled with strawberries and served with cream and sugar.
