Spring is finally coming – the winter blues are well and truly behind us and we are looking forward to the lighter nights and warmer days. Bluer skies, brighter days and long awaited sunshine – what can we do with all these extra daylight hours? Eat, drink and be merry, of course! Liverpool offers some unique and picturesque places that are perfect for springtime; from post-walk meals to cocktails-with-a-view, there is something for everyone. This bumper guide will tell you the best places to enjoy a fresh, springtime menu right here in Liverpool.
Belzan is special because its menu changes with the seasons. Some weeks nothing changes, other weeks three or four dishes might change, which makes this a very exciting restaurant to visit all year round. Everything is made fresh, with care and by hand! The wine menu is also carefully chosen based on Belzan’s passion and ethos of serving nourishing food and drinks that are good for the planet and good for the soul. What’s not to love?
Launched in 2014, Maray has expanded to four locations across Manchester and Liverpool. Our favourite is located at the top of Liverpool’s bustling and bohemian Bold Street. Maray offers Middle Eastern, North African and Mediterranean inspired small plates served alongside cocktails and wine. The emphasis here is firmly on carefully sourced, seasonal and sustainable ingredients with casual but attentive and friendly service. Expect dishes such as falafel, spiced lentils, pork cheek and lots of lamb!
Hafla Hafla serves Middle Eastern inspired street food with local craft beer and exciting cocktails. It’s healthy, delicious and not the kind of food you’ll see on many other menus. It’s feel-good food that makes you think of sun, summer and good times. Expect ingredients like pomegranate seeds, fresh pickled cabbage, harissa mayo and general deliciousness! The main restaurant is located on the infamous Lark Lane and the other location is a residency in the Baltic Market.
Tiger Rock was formed through a passion for fresh East Asian cooking and the desire to bring the food of these roots to Liverpool. The owners have pulled the best from Thai, Chinese, Malaysian, Singaporean and Vietnamese flavours, with a twist. There are two locations: one in Liverpool city centre and one on Smithdown Road, so you’re never too far away from a Tiger Rock restaurant.
El Gato Negro is an award-winning tapas restaurant and bar housed in an historic building on Exchange Flags, in the heart of Liverpool city centre. Founder/chef patron Simon Shaw and his team create seasonally-influenced dishes, combining modern and traditional Spanish flavours and techniques while taking inspiration and ingredients from closer to home. With an extensive menu of vegetarian, meat and fish options, you’ll be spoiled for choice! Their food is perfectly complemented by a superbly chosen range of Spanish wines, sherries, spirits, tonics, beers and cocktails.
Oh Me Oh My is one of Liverpool’s hidden gems and is also the perfect place to go in springtime. On sunny days, you can head up to the Goodness Gracious roof garden, where you can enjoy one of the best views of Liverpool’s Pier Head, including the famous Three Graces which is directly opposite Oh Me Oh My. You can enjoy a cocktail or two on the rooftop, or even a Parisian-style afternoon tea. Before heading to Oh Me Oh My, make sure you book in advance as this hidden gem is fast becoming more popular, so it’s best to book ahead.
Nova Scotia is an independent bar and eatery that celebrates Liverpool’s forgotten Nova Scotia district that was an integral part of Liverpool’s maritime history. The area, now known as Mann Island, was until the early part of the 20th century a shanty town and dock, known as Nova Scotia due to its twinning with the Canadian district. Canada traded with Liverpool in many types of wood used for the huge amount of shipbuilding here at this dock. As part of this twinning, there’s even a Liverpool, Mann Island and River Mersey in Nova Scotia, Canada. With locally sourced ingredients and vegan/vegetarian-friendly menus, this is a brilliant to eat out this spring.
NORD is the joint venture between GSG Hospitality and Chef Daniel Heffy, and offers a unique dining experience with a focus on regional produce, celebrating Northern heritage. Liverpudlian Daniel Heffy, defines the style of cooking as ‘Travelled British’ – a nod towards his classic local roots and time spent in Scandinavia. This is a very unique eatery that fuses Nordic style with Northern hospitality and heritage. You’ll receive a friendly and engaging service that’s as slick as the dishes.
You can’t beat a good pub in spring and The Grange is definitely not one to miss. It has a large restaurant area, which can cater for large parties and functions, so if you’re booking for a big group then this could be for you. This is a friendly local pub with great beers, wines and spirits that serves quality food daily. It also shows live sports and is very dog-friendly, so if you’re out walking the dog in the springtime sun, make sure you’ve reserved a table at The Grange for a well earned post-walk drink and meal.
