Liverpool may not be top of mind when it comes to Caribbean cravings, but the city actually boasts some of the best and most authentic Caribbean restaurants and cafes around! Big, bold flavours, melt in the mouth meats and friendly, family run businesses, what more could you ask for? Caribbean food is a product of many different cultures and tastes put together with the most important ingredients in Caribbean food being rice, plantains, beans, coriander, chickpeas, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and coconut. This unique blend of ingredients creates a flavour that is distinctly different from any other type of food.

Raggas Caribbean cafe has been named among the best serving Caribbean food in the UK. Big 7 Travel revealed its top 25 Caribbean restaurants across the UK, with Raggas Caribbean Cafe in South Liverpool coming in at number 16. The family-run Smithdown Road restaurant serves up authentic Caribbean cuisine such as Jamaican jerk chicken, stewed steak and sweet potato and boneless tilapia fish.
You can also get stewed steak and sweet potato for £7 which is a bargain! All meals are available to eat in or takeaway – they also serve rum based cocktails that will make you feel like you’re sat in the Caribbean, not on Smithdown Road…
Liverpool has two Turtle Bays, one on Hanover Street and one on the bustling Victoria Street. Despite them both serving the same food and drinks, you’ll definitely find the crowd at Victoria Street is full of people indulging in the famous 241 cocktails whereas the Handover Street Turtle Bay attracts more food eaters and families! They have a vast food menu that encompasses all of the traditional Caribbean flavours including chicken marinated in coconut and fiery scotch bonnet sauce, prawns in a mango and pineapple zingy curry plus sides of fried plantain and sweet potato fries.
If you follow RayRayz Instagram, you’ll have seen their daily posts that showcase their delicious, traditional Caribbean food. Their menu includes salt fish, oxtail and their special lamb curry and not to mention their fried plantain is delicious! The meats are slow cooked and tender so they fall apart and melt in your mouth – not to mention the portion sizes are huge and reasonably priced, with most main dishes ranging from between £6-£7.
When you think of the Caribbean, you might not automatically think of Cuba, but did you know that Cuba is located where the northern Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and Atlantic Ocean meet? This has resulted in a melting pot of cuisines including traditional caribbean flavours. We highly recommend the Spicy Rum Chicken to start, the Mojo Pulled Pork and Pineapple Salsa Tacos and the banana empanada to finish. You don’t need to leave Liverpool to get the summery, vibrant flavours of the Caribbean!
