While Nok’s Kitchen is primarily recognised for its Thai cuisine, the menu features Malaysian-inspired dishes that stand out for their complexity and depth. From chicken satay skewers to rich coconut soup flavoured with galangal, lemongrass, chillies, and lime leaves the flavours are bold and bright. Don’t miss their decadent deep-fried ice-cream dessert (coconut ice coated in panko breadcrumbs, deep-fried until golden brown and topped with syrup). Yum!

Kampong Ah Lee, a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s Malaysian culinary scene since 2007, is enriched by the heritage of four generations of the Lee family chefs. Celebrating authentic dishes inspired by the family’s home village, the restaurant is renowned for its Nasi Lemak— rice steamed with coconut milk and served with dried anchovies, peanuts, hard-boiled egg, cucumber and sambal paste. The décor is fun and colourful, and the atmosphere is super casual — making it a great spot to enjoy a meal with mates.

Lucky Yu offers an Asian fusion experience with a menu that includes small plates inspired by Malaysian cuisine. Their ‘dirty rice’ is a must-try, featuring a mix of shrimp, short rib, brisket, pork belly, chilli, coconut, and spring onion. The restaurant also offers brilliant cocktails — not least the ‘Hidden QI’, a long and refreshing tipple made with plum sake, pomelo juice and lemon syrup.
