Where to go for mac and cheese in Glasgow
Ah, mac and cheese, the ultimate crowd pleaser. Glaswegians really can’t get enough of the stuff – there’s even a mac and cheese appreciation society located in the city centre! We can certainly see why. Little beats a steaming hot plate of macaroni, coated in an unctuous and rich cheese sauce, complete, of course, with a crisp topping. We’ve rounded up the city’s top five destinations to get your hands on this well-loved classic.
Sloans – Glasgow’s oldest bar and restaurant – and mac and cheese are pretty much synonymous. Tucked down a picturesque backstreet (twinkling fairy lights and all) you’ll find this well-adored little gem, whose mac and cheese is the stuff of legends. Sloans, in fact, house monthly SMAC meetings; that is, meeting held by the Scottish Macaroni Appreciation Club – an organisation founded in 2010 for people who love macaroni and cheese. If one plate of this delicious pasta isn’t enough, on the last Wednesday of each month you can tuck into four courses of mac and cheese, including the ‘mystery mac’ and a pint of beer or wine, for just £18. This one’s for serious mac and cheese lovers!
As if mac and cheese wasn’t rich enough – Instagram hot-spot LUNCH in Anniesland offers a macaroni cheese toastie (yes, you read that correctly). The mozzarella mac and cheese toasted sandwich will only set you back a couple of quid, and the portion size – as you might well expect – is generous. It’s not all style over substance, though. The food here is genuinely delicious: the combination of cheeses means that you get the ascetically pleasing oozy cheese-pull (thanks to the mozzarella) as well as a tasty, tangy kick. Not one for the faint hearted, be sure to arrive hungry!
Fancy a mac and cheese that’s both tasty and refined? Then look no further! Located in trendy Finnieston is Porter & Rye, a restaurant specialising in prime cut of meats and fine Scottish produce. Alongside the well-loved steaks and ribeye burgers you’ll spot the decadent mac and cheese. Vegetarians and vegans look away now, for this eatery loves its meat, and this extends to its mac and cheese dish. The pasta is cooked using bone marrow and the entire dish is served with crispy pancetta over the top. For the carnivores amongst us, this one’s for you.
Here’s one for you vegans! Just because you are plant based, doesn’t mean you should have to miss out on one of Glasgow’s most loved dishes. Mono offers some of the finest vegan and vegetarian food in the city – from ‘fish’ and chips to lip-smacking ‘milk’shakes, this place has got everything you could possibly desire, veganised. The mac and cheese is a real classic and it comes served with fries and salad. We promise you won’t feel short changed. There’s nothing artificial or odd tasting about this vegan rendition of a classic: the pasta is always beautifully cooked, the sauce rich and full of flavour.
Chinaski’s on North Street lives by its philosophy of: food, drinks and music. And it does all three extremely well. Here you will find some of the best cocktails in town, alongside delicious pizzas, burgers and vegan-friendly dishes. Among the tempting sides is a classic mac and cheese, and a truffle version which is mouthwateringly good. Order this for the table and thank us later.
