Scottish kids will likely be overcome with excitement at the prospect of a two-month summer holiday around the corner – parents, on the other hand, may be feeling slightly less enthusiastic! Fear not. When you’ve exhausted every board game and colouring-in activity, and another two-hour animated film just won’t cut the mustard, where better to whittle several hours than a laidback restaurant? We’ve rounded up five of the best dining spots to take the kids to this school holiday, where we guarantee the adults will enjoy too.
Everyone loves the Hillhead book club, and with good reason! There’s something for everybody here: a cool cocktail list, cheap beer, excellent music, funky interiors and a playroom for kids. The menu is diverse, cheap, and everything is tasty. Adults will like their ‘straight from the allotment’ salads, the street food Bao Buns, as well as their large burgers and Pies. Kids can choose from the children’s menu, where you’ll find smaller portions and breakfast dishes (just £5 each) that come served alongside a carton of fresh juice.

Stack and Still is the UK’s largest Urban Pancake Restaurant, and with over 12 million combinations to choose from (yes, really) there’s no messing about here! Perfect for kids and adults alike – there’s something on the menu for everybody. Begin by ‘choosing your stack’ (there’s Buttermilk, Buckwheat, Protein, Gluten Free and Low Fat), select a size (single, double, short stack) and add your toppings – the choices are endless! From savoury options like Bacon, Smoked Salmon and Chicken Tikka to sweet offerings like Grilled Peaches, Greek Yoghurt, Pecans and Peanut butter, the kids will love designing their own plate. The interiors are light and airy with plenty of space to park buggies and prams and the staff are friendly. The upbeat music alongside the cool industrial-looking interiors are bound to keep young ones entertained (incidentally there’s also a pretty extensive cocktail menu to keep the adults entertained too!).
Why limit yourself to just one restaurant when you could head to Big Feed, Scotland’s biggest indoor street food market, where you can choose from multiple food stalls. Kids and adults will love choosing their pick of cuisine: there’s pizzas, burgers, tacos, hotdogs, ice cream sandwiches and more! With live music and DJs, games for kids and plenty of outdoor seating – Big Feed makes the perfect destination to spend an afternoon, come rain or shine!
Pizza is universally adored, and we can assure you that both adults and kids will love all that Paesano’s have to offer. The menu is blissfully simple, and the prices are low – a Margarita pizza will set you back only five pounds. With a heavy focus on Neapolitan authentic, Paesano sources everything from Italy: from the fresh ingredients, the chefs in the kitchen to the actual pizza oven built in Naples. Each week you’ll find a new special, so if you’re up for something more adventurous than Mozzarella and Tomato, they have your back (think: Pancetta, Asparagus, Fior Di Latte, Sugo and Basil). The teeth-achingly sweet desserts are bound to please the kids (like their White Chocolate and Raspberry Sponge or decadent Biscoff Brownie) while adults might like to polish of their meal with something more sophisticated – say Paesano’s famous boozy Tiramisu.
