Where to find Bristol's finest curries

Curries are by far one of the nation’s favourite dishes and there’s something particularly special about going out for one. As one of the dishes that lends itself to sharing, you’re able to try and taste each others, so that it really brings out the social side of being out for dinner. Bristol is full of amazing Asian restaurants, offering some of the best, award-winning and simply delicious curries you could imagine. Here are some of the restaurants offering the best curries in Bristol.

Urban Tandoor is an award-winning Indian restaurant with two locations: one in the heart of Bristol’s city centre and one in Clifton. It promises an enjoyable and memorable dining experience and is the perfect choice if you’re looking for traditional Indian cuisine. Customer favourites include the jalfrezi, sagg aloo and chicken tikka masala. Whether you’re looking for a family meal, romantic dinner for two, or a work night out, Urban Tandoor – with its bright and beautiful decor, along with attentive and friendly service – is a great choice all round. We also recommend checking out its Instagram page to see some of the fun the staff get up to!

Namak is fairly new on the Indian restaurant scene, but has exploded onto Bristol’s radar since opening, winning three different best restaurant in Bristol awards last year. You can find it in St Werberghs, on the much-loved Mina Road. The food is made using only the finest and freshest ingredients to soothe your taste buds. With a more traditional take on some curry classics, the food is rich and satisfying in the best way possible. The restaurant itself is intimate and cosy, with amazing service topping off the experience. With an open kitchen, you can see the food being lovingly prepared and even get a glimpse of the amazing tandoor oven. Alongside the fantastic food, Namak serves beers from brewery Wiper and True, from just across the road, which is just about as local as it comes.

If you’re looking to splash out slightly more, then Nutmeg is a brilliant choice. It’s a vibrant, independent Indian restaurant in Clifton Village. Its menu is inspired by the diversity of India and its 29 states, which stretch from the Himalayas in the north, to tropical south India. The founders of the restaurant were brought together by a love of Indian food and the passion to share it with the people of Bristol. The menu is carefully created using only the best local suppliers to ensure only the freshest and most vibrant food is brought to your table. We would highly recommend the tasting menu, which allows you to sample a little from all the different regions that the food is inspired from.

Thali is a cosy and friendly space in the heart of Easton, and is like no other Indian restaurant in Bristol. It’s an award-winning restaurant that’s renowned for producing simple food, full of exotic flavours, using local, seasonal produce and traditional Indian techniques. The community feel in Easton is huge and you really feel that both in the vibe and service at this restaurant. The menu is full of healthy and delicious Indian street food and tiffin takeaway. If you’re someone that likes to have a little bit of everything, then the Thali option on the menu is perfect for you. Options like Keralan Nandan chicken or Goan fish curry are all served with subji, dal, basmati rice, yoghurt and crunchy salad. You leave this restaurant really feeling like you’ve been nourished and looked after.

For something a little different, then why not try Muse Brasserie. You can find it on Prince Street and it is the creation of Franck Grillet and Chef Pramod. Together they have created a restaurant with heavy French and Indian influences, with the aim of every guest leaving with their expectations exceeded. The attention to detail in the ingredients of the dishes, the artwork on the menu and the décor in the restaurant is used to try to achieve this. Although the food is predominantly French themed, it has a twist of Asian flavours, and it has some amazing curries on the menu. For example the Malabar prawn curry with coconut rice and paratha, or the Muse thali served with dahl and cumin rice. Overall this restaurant brings something completely different, not seen elsewhere in Bristol. Blending the richness of French food with the vibrancy of Asian flavours leads to something magical.

Giggling Squid boasts adventurous menus featuring ingredients found only in Thailand, resulting in dishes created by expert Thai chefs who cook up classics such as Thai Green Curry, Pad Thai and the signature Salt and Pepper Squid. We particularly love the Sea Bream with Green Curry. This is a combination of crisp-fried sea bream fillet topped with mouthwatering green curry, perfumed with aromatic sweet basil. Absolutely delicious.
