Serving up modern twists on Mexican homestyle fare, the team at Mejico focuses on fresh produce and a menu fit for sharing.

The atmosphere here is as bustling and lively as you’d expect, with Australia’s largest tequila selection on offer. The tableside guacamole is a real crowd pleaser and the food is bursting with flavour. Head here for late-night margaritas in a fun space.

For the most exciting plant-based Mexican-inspired experience the city has to offer, head to Vandal, the breezy Newtown spot that plates organic corn tortilla tacos with toppings like Peruvian yellow chilli “chick’n” katsu.

The Vandal take on Mexican fare includes vegan tacos, pina coladas and tons of spice and flavour. Vandal stays unapologetically true to themselves, providing Sydneysiders with one of the most appetising veggie menus in the city.

If you’re hankering for authentic Mexican, taco chance on El Loco. This Mexican cantina is teeming with personality and sports a colourful outdoor courtyard where you can toast smoky mezcals right up to 3am on weekends.

Order from the menu of tacos or take a chance on the taco secreto with a filling that’s kept secret until it reaches your table for a little added excitement.

El Loco is the kind of place that the crowds head to on the weekend, so get in early and enjoy the fun at one of the city’s liveliest hangouts.

Flying Fajita Sistas
cuisinesMexican

Flying Fajita Sistas is the Glebe Point eatery that’s been a Mexican institution since 2008 serving up homestyle fare in cosy digs.

The dining room here is casual and laid-back, and the focus is on having a good time and digging into colourful plates of traditional and delicious Mexican food.

The sizzling fajitas – grilled meats or vegetables with corn or wheat tortillas, black beans, red rice and guacamole – are a no-brainer order. Other excellent options are the chimichangas and enchiladas, the perfect food to go with the margaritas, Mexican beer or Jaritos soft drinks.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Chimichanga ($20)

At the helm of Chula is chef Alvaro Valenzuela who draws on his Mexican roots to create dishes with street food cred.

The menu here is seafood-focused, and you’ll find tuna sliced sashimi-style and served as tostadas, alongside share plates featuring octopus in guajillo-garlic oil with papas and crispy parsley.

Got a sweet tooth? There aren’t many places where you’ll get a churro ice cream sandwich, but Chula serves one with salted caramel ice cream, peanuts, and dulce le leche.

Dish Cult’s top pick: Tuna sashimi tostadas ($18)
