Stix & Pita

Crowned AGFG’s best Greek eatery, Stix and Pita is the gem of Enmore’s food scene, serving hungry hordes of customers with charcoal slow cooked prime meats and – you guessed it – freshly made pita bread. Choose from chicken, pork, and lamb meats slow-cooked over a charcoal spit, 11-hour slow cooker lamb shoulder or grilled halloumi cheese if meat’s not your thing.

Their herculean size platters (seriously, there’s even one called the hercules platter) seems specifically created to suit the chronically undecided and hungry. Platters range from a sampling of all meats with a side of handmade pita bread and chips, or your choice of marinated souvla meat with chips, tzatziki, and salad. With flavours that step straight off grills in Greece, there’s plenty of vegetarian and gluten-free options as well so everyone can join in the fun. Try the $29 Achilles Plate.

The Apollo

The Apollo is a contemporary spot that’s a behemoth of Greek sharing plates, featuring Mediterranean-esque wood-fired dishes in an intimate, minimalist space. Heralded as some of the best Greek food in the city, the portions here are generous and the air wafts with the aroma of grilled lamb and octopus.

Grab a couple of mates and head here to share their saganaki, cheese, honey and oregano entree, the oven-baked lamb shoulder with greek yoghurt, and their wild weed and cheese pie for a classy, modern take on Greek food. Must-try dish? The $17 Saganaki is a delight!

Kazzi Beach Greek

An authentic Greek tavern in a premium Balmoral Beach locale, Kazzi Beach Greek is a buzzy joint with flavourful dishes that range from sharing plates to individual meals.

To start, the Kazzi mezze plate is a winner with pita bread to share and two choices of dips and marinated olives, while their spit-fired meat and chips combo is sure to please any carne fan. There’s also a selection of Greek-style seafood, from their Kazzi-style chargrilled octopus to their prawns saganaki, and of course, no Greek restaurant is complete without a range of souvlaki wraps.

This gorgeous spot is decked out in blue and white maritime colours, and you can enjoy a hearty post-beach feed while soaking in the sun at their alfresco dining. What to order? The $23 Spit meat & pitta.

Barzaari

The labour of love of chef Darryl Martin (formerly from Quay) and Cyprus-born Andrew Jordanou, Barzaari is family-run rustic, contemporary chic and the Eastern Mediterranean flavours here are second to none.

Taking beloved classics for a ride with a modern spin,
each dish comprises of fresh produce and spices painstakingly sourced straight from Cyprus.

There are larger BBQ-laden plates with roast chicken harissa, a spicy and aromatic beef sausage dish called Pastourma, and souvlakis of all kinds, sides of chips, tabouleh and mograbieh (braised smoked eggplant and tomato), and haloumi, cracked olives, and falafel. We want everything, and you should too. What do we recommend? The $45 Kleftiko – slow cooked lamb shoulder.

Alpha

Alpha pulls out all the stops with an open-plan kitchen, white and grey colour palette, marble table lamps, and of course the piece de resistance: a stone wall engraved with Greek lettering.

Having recently undergone massive renovative works, not only is the interior different, so is the menu. Fans of the OG fret not, the cult favourite spanakopita is a mainstay that won’t go away. New dishes feature spit-fire suckling lamb, smoked eggplant pies, and moussaka with beef brisket, baked ricotta and eggplant.

Expect home-style Greek food, great service, stellar ambience, and an experience that’ll turn you from curious visitor to die-hard fan. The dish that hits? The $28 Spanakopita.
