Pizza is a subject that ignites a lot of passion and when we recently asked our community of loyal Dish Cult members and followers where to find the best pizza in Sydney, they weren’t shy in telling us where we should be going!
From super traditional and Neapolitan to New York-inspired and vegan, here, in no particular order, are your favourite pizza places across Sydney.
The reviews are in! On Dish Cult’s Da Orazio page you’ll find reviews ranging from “The best pizza I’ve ever eaten” to the “Best pizza in Sydney”. It could be the traditional Neapolitan wood fired oven, the use of the “biga” method, which produces a lighter and fluffier dough, or the range of authentic toppings, but this is a pizza that demands trying (or if you’ve already tried it, many return visits)!
Dish Cult’s top pick: Friarielli pizza – pork sausage ragu, smoked fior di latte, chilli and friarielli (broccoli rabe) puree ($29)
We could tell you all about Gigi in Newtown. It’s one of few Sydney pizza places that is a member of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, basically the organisation that ensures pizza is made in the traditional Neapolitan way, and it is 100% plant-based. But let’s hear from one Dish Cult member instead who had plenty to say about his favourite pizza joint:
“Gigi Pizzeria never fails to hit the spot with its authentic and deeply flavoured pizza dough, flavour-packed yet restrained toppings – particularly the house-made, no-dairy-needed ricotta paired with grilled eggplant on the melanzane pizza – bellissimo!” Mic drop.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Melanzane pizza – San Marzano tomato, tree nut ricotta, grilled eggplant, basil salsa, green vie parmesan and extra virgin olive oil ($26)
If you’re after a pizza made with a sourdough base that has been fermented for 72 hours, Pizza Madre is the place for you. This Marrickville pizza place is the kind of local most of us can only dream about, but some of you are lucky enough to experience the seasonal menu of rotating pizzas all made without meat on a regular basis. Expect toppings like Jerusalem artichoke puree, king brown mushrooms, fior di latte, taleggio and parsley, or cherry tomato with celery, eggplant, olive and caper caponata, San Marzano tomato, parsley and pine nuts. Almost everything can be made vegan or gluten free, so it’s a great one for a big group.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Pizza with caramelised onions, fior di latte, spinach, roasted potato and smoked cheddar
Want your pizza by the slice with a side of hard rock and an injection of pinball machines? Head to Frankie’s! New York cool and Sydney style all come together at this award winning bar where you can get a slice of a hand rolled pie cooked on stone with live music, craft beers and serious street cred. Go for Frankie’s famous cheese pizza and go hard, or go home!
Dish Cult’s top pick: Pizza topped with San Marzano tomatoes, garlic, capers and olives
The nice thing about asking you where to get the best pizza is that we hear about gems that might not be on our immediate radar, like George’s Pizza out in the Hills District. George and his wife Kelly have been making pizza in the area since 1986 and they put a heap of love into everything that comes out of the kitchen. You said it’s the best, so here it is on the list. With toppings like butter chicken and pulled pork, it’s far from traditional, but that doesn’t make it any less delicious.
Dish Cult’s top pick: San chorizo pizza – chorizo and diced tomato on a garlic tomato base ($34 family size)
Heading a little north now, Secret Slice in West Ryde is a secret no more. You nominated this as one of your favourite pizza places and with its unpretentious vibe and roaring takeaway business, we can see why. You’ll find stacks of pies to suit every mood. From a classic capricciosa to a totally patriotic Anzac pizza with roast beef, thinly sliced potato, pumpkin and caramelised onion, there’s something for everyone here.
Dish Cult’s top pick: Meatball calzone ($12)
When a family from Rome starts a restaurant where they want people to eat, drink, laugh and celebrate, you just know the pizza is going to be good and that’s exactly what you get at Italian Street Kitchen. With locations across Sydney, as well as in Brisbane and Perth, you’ll find traditional wood-fired pizzas with classic toppings ranging from a buffalo mozzarella margherita to a fiery prawn and nduja (spicy Calabrian spreadable salami).
Dish Cult’s top pick: Prawn and nduja pizza – Tomato base, fior di latte cheese, marinated chilli and garlic prawns, spicy pork nduja, roasted cherry tomatoes, capers and rocket ($30)
A big thank you to everyone who nominated and shared their favourite pizza places with us! We look forward to finding out where YOU think the best restaurants, cafes and eateries are in Sydney and sharing that with the world.
