Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is not far off now, a special day where mothers are respected and honoured for their love and care across the country. Mother’s Day became a highly celebrated day by the 1950s and is connected to ‘Mothering Sunday’, the fourth Sunday of Lent and therefore attached to Easter. In Manchester, there are lots of places to go to for a meal or drinks to celebrate the leading lady in your life. Here, we’ve created a guide to some of our favourites, which will be perfect for a Mother’s Day outing.

Evelyn's Cafe & Bar
cuisinesCafe, Bar

Eveleyn’s is a healthy restaurant and bar in the heart of the Northern Quarter. It’s a perfect place for Sunday brunch, roast or even just for a couple of drinks with your mum in the Parisian styled bar. The ECB breakfast (merguez sausage, fried egg, beans, beet pud, slow roasted tomato, toasted sourdough) is a must try. But there are other fantastic brunch options too, such as shakshuka, fried chicken sando and the mouthwatering buttermilk pancakes. As Mother’s Day is on a Sunday you could get a roast. The options include Moroccan styled lamb, sirloin steak, roast chicken and a vegetarian dish – the puy lentil wellington. Evelyn’s will provide you and your mum with the perfect atmosphere for a relaxing Mother’s Day whilst you eat delicious food.

Trove has been at the forefront of the café and bakery scene since 2011 with establishments in Ancoats and Levenshulme. In the city centre, there is also a Trove on Marble Street. Trove provides seasonal brunch dishes, making it perfect place for a Mother’s Day meal out. But as this place is also a top class bakery, it offers its own chutneys, cakes, superb sourdough bread, pastries and jams. If you like eggs, then Trove has you covered with the eggs Benedictine (poached eggs, bacon, hollandaise sauce, capers on toast) and the eggs Florentine (poached eggs, cavolo nero, miso hollandaise and sesame on toast). Other delicious dishes include the French toast on a croissant loaf, kimcheese, bagels and – of course – the vegan breakfast. Trove is a cosy bakery and café that provides you with plenty to eat.

El Gato Negro is a wonderful Spanish restaurant that has been at the forefront of restaurants in Manchester for a few years now. Created by Chef Simon Shaw, El Gato Negro would be a fantastic place to go with your mum because of the high-quality dishes and the ability to share numerous plates together. Some fantastic options include the bikini toasted sandwich, the Catalan bread options, the gorgeous crispy baby squid, the patatas bravas and the mini-Catalan chorizo. The aged Manchego cheese with bittersweet figs and olive torta is also a mesmerising dish full of exquisite tastes. This would be a great treat for your mum.

Common is a lovely bar and café in the heart of the Northern Quarter. But it’s also the home of Nell’s Pizza, a group of people who make delicious New York inspired pizza pies. Now, it might not seem very ‘Mother’s Day’, but having a couple of drinks and sharing a large pizza together in a low-key but fun venue might make it more memorable. From sharing cold plates, such as meat cuts and pickles, to slices of pizza or a choice between different 14 inch and 22 inch pizzas. You could get a pizza each, share two 14 inch pizzas or get a large one to share. It’s up to you! The upside down margherita is a very interesting pizza, as the tomato is on top of the cheese, while the chilli honey, mozzarella, nduja and pepperoni option is a mouthwatering one. It might not be a traditional Mother’s Day option, but it will be a fun day out if you decide to have a Nell’s pizza.

The Cosy Club is both relaxed and extravagant at the same time. It has beautiful walls and sits in the famous Corn Exchange in the city centre. Cosy Club provides breakfast, late night drinks, lunch and a cosy atmosphere for Sundays; it will definitely provide an excellent Sunday vibe for Mother’s Day. There are tons of options for all types of meals. Perhaps Sunday brunch would be perfect for spending some time with your mother. From shakshuka to the Boston brunch, you will certainly find it tricky to decide what to have because of the many incredible options on offer. There are also separate vegan and gluten-free menus, making it perfect if you or your mother or siblings have specific diet requirements. Lunch is just as flexible too with small plates, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and mains all available.

Some great dishes we’ve had involved mussels, crab, roast hake and roast monkfish. If the crab is available, we recommended it as it comes with parmesan and parsley, crispy samphire and crusty bread. The cosy yet vibrant atmosphere creates the perfect setting for a relaxed and enjoyable Mother’s Day celebration, inviting families to gather and share delectable meals while expressing gratitude and love for our mothers.

The curry sauce hits the right spot with the fish, which is wonderfully battered. The potato dauphinoise pie is a French take on a pie, consisting of Emmental cheese, red onion chutney, creamed leeks and spinach. There’s also fantastic fried chicken and onion bhajis, providing some small plate options to diners, too.
