Anarchic pizza making

Refusing to conform to a set pizza style, Pizza Punks takes an alternative look at the classic recipe. Now in Glasgow, Belfast, Leeds and Newcastle, the independent brand opened its Scottish flagship store on St Vincent Street in 2016. Housed in a warehouse building, the restaurant’s ethos is all about letting diners have lots of freedom. That means as many toppings as you want, at no extra cost.

Punk’d up sourdough pizzas

If you like your pizzas funky and punky, then Pizza Punks is the place for you. Bases are made by hand using a sourdough starter that was sourced from the famous Boudin Bakery in San Francisco, then double fermented for at least 48 hours, to provide oodles of flavour. And the pasta is made in-house each day too, using authentic Italian ingredients. Choose healthy toppings like jackfruit, stem broccoli and courgette, or indulge with some black pudding, beef shin ragu or rum ham hock atop your pizza.

Vegan feasts

Pizza Punks love creating imaginative vegan specials. These have included the ‘Pepperoni’ smothered in San Marzano tomato and basil sauce, buffalo ‘mozzarella’, vegan ‘nduja, ‘pepperoni’ and basil. The plant-based mac and cheese is a comfort food highlight, or if you’d prefer something lighter, there’s a gorgonzola style salad with rioja pears, walnut and balsamic glaze. We’ve also seen specials like a vegan pizza with white sauce, smoked ‘mozzarella’, sea salt and black pepper ‘chicken’, garlic and rosemary potatoes. Gluten-free and halal diets are also catered for.

Anarchy in the oven

Create whatever you want. Diners can pay a set price for a pizza or pasta, then choose their desired sauce, toppings — with no limit on how many you get, you can load your dish as high as you like. If you’d rather not think too hard, the menu includes a range of pre-defined classics and specials. And come holidays, you’ll find seasonal offers like the Christmas pigs in blankets pizza and the Dia De Los Muertos Mexican pizza.

The desserts offer something a little out of the ordinary, so do save room. You might like to sample the Caramelised Pineapple Cheesecake with toasted coconut, a Candied Bacon Crème Brulée, or if you haven’t had your fill of sourdough, a Caramel Biscoff Pizza.

Order your Pizza Party in a Box

Pizza Punks has also developed a line of pizza kits designed to be made at home, so you can become an artisan in your own kitchen. They’re a great activity to keep kids occupied during the school holidays. Or if you don’t have the time to make yours from scratch, there are part-baked options that only need to be popped in the oven. Plus, you can order a Pizza Party in a Box, which includes everything you need to make your meal, along with a choice of cocktails and a QR code linking a dedicated playlist for your party. These at-home options can be delivered anywhere in the UK, Monday to Friday.

Catering for little punks

It’s no secret that kids love pizza. And the few who don’t will usually feast happily on a portion of fresh pasta. The brand encourages parents to eschew the larger corporate pizza chains and bring their little ones for the full punk experience here. They’ll receive their own menu with a meal deal that includes a fruit shoot, main and portion of ice cream (which they can punk up with a choice of sauces plus chocolate chips, marshmallows or cookie crumbs). Older kids will love the venue’s house sodas made by hand: strawberry lemonade, cherry pop soda, pineapple and chilli soda and passionfruit and coconut. And the Choc Chip Ice-Cream Cookie Sandwich goes down a treat for afters.

Original cocktails

Older punks can enjoy brewery-fresh tank beer, craft lagers, stouts and IPAs. Super value house red, white and fizzy wines are delivered in recyclable barrels and served by glass or carafe (starting at just £5 a pop). And the cocktails here are a lot of colourful fun. There’s the Drumstick Caiprisma, which comes served with a retro lollipop; Dazed And Confused, which contains cannabis oil as well as mezcal, Aperol, creme de pêche, lemon juice and gomme; and Original Sin, topped with lemon foam.

Pizza Punks is open from 12noon to 10pm daily, with a 30 minute later closure on Fridays and Saturdays. Booking isn’t essential, but it is recommended to guarantee your table.
