Where to go for schnitzels in Edinburgh

A good schnitzel should have a succulent and tender middle and a crispy, golden exterior. Though the dish might be simple, there’s still plenty of room for error. Brewhemia is a haven for those with a thirst for discovery, tank fresh beer, artisan coffee, cocktails, super fine wine – and of course, schnitzel! The Haus Schnitzel is truly something to behold: tender, breaded chicken breast pan-fried with garlic and thyme served with a zesty salsa verde and parmesan aioli. If you fancy something a wee bit lighter, but you’re still in the mood for a taste of schnitzel, why not opt for the Caesar Schnitzel salad? Made with small bits of pan-fried chicken schnitzel and accompanied by iceberg lettuce, crispy proscuitto, fresh basil and basil oil, you won’t feel like you’re missing out.

For the most up-market schnitzel-style dish in the city, look no further than to the famous Chicken Milanese at the lovely Ivy Restaurant located on St. Andrew Square. Though not technically a schnitzel, this Italian take on the German classic sees a succulent, brioche-crumbed chicken breast topped with a fried egg, parmesan and a truffle cream sauce. Beyond the well-loved Chicken Milanese sits an array of mouthwatering dishes, so if you fancy something other than meat you’ll be well catered for. Prices are high – the chicken will set you back almost £17 – but it’s well worth your pennies. The atmosphere is sophisticated and stylish, and the staff are helpful and friendly. Not one to miss!

For a delicious and authentic schnitzel, On The Roll has you covered. Established in 2012 by two Germans studying at university in Edinburgh, this small catering company has gained much attention over the past 10 years. Offering a variety of traditional German bratwursts (including a vegan option), you’ll also find some pretty stand-out schnitzel. The breaded pork cutlet is fried in butter for a crisp bite and a golden brown colour, served simply with a wedge of lemon. We won’t blame you for opting for one of the decadent side dishes too  – all of which are perfect accompaniments to the schnitzel – like the homemade sauerkraut with bacon.

Okay, okay. Again – not technically a schnitzel, but Mamma Roma is a firm favourite in Edinburgh and it’s not hard to see why. The Pollo Milanese (breaded chicken breast deep fried and served with spaghetti al pomodoro) is so indulgent, you won’t even mind that you’re missing out on authenticity. Prices are low and the portion sizes are generous. The interiors are filled with exposed brickwork and the atmosphere is wonderfully relaxed.
