There’s nothing more satisfying than cutting through a perfectly poached egg and watching the yolk pop.
We’ve compiled a list of our favourite spots to get a classic Eggs Benedict in Christchurch.
Nothing says breakfast quite like visiting the friendly neighbourhood café; that is exactly what Little Pom’s is; a warm and welcoming destination dedicated to wholesome, flavourful food; and coffee just how we like it. The breakfast menu is irresistible with options like the chilli scrambled eggs and ricotta blueberry hotcakes. But there are no other contenders in sight when we see eggs benedict on the menu. Little Poms benny is one of our favourite twists on the classic dish, served atop buttermilk cheddar biscuits, with smoked bacon, charred corn avocado salsa, lime and chipotle hollandaise. It tastes even better than it sounds.
Drexels is a breakfast institution in dear-ole Christchurch, stealing hearts for over 30 years with its homely food and welcoming hospitality. Find some old favourites and tasty new additions on the menu like the avocado smash, breakfast burritos and three-egg omelettes. However, today, we are in the mood for some classic egg benedict. This dish is a Drexels’ legend, with two soft poached eggs served on a toasted English muffin. Then, choose between ham, bacon, salmon or spinach. The final touches include a layer of Drexel’s famous hollandaise sauce and served with a hashbrown.
Known as one of the most notorious brunch spots in all of Christchurch, Hello Sunday Café is a beloved escape from day-to-day life. Hello Sunday Café is as close to fine dining as brunch can get; we are talking brioche French toast, Biscoff bircher and crispy Malaysian salad. The signature eggs benny dish has gained notoriety with diners for its perfectly balanced flavours and its rich and indulgent ingredients. The dish has herb and preserved lemon, potato hash and wilted spinach with your choice of Otautahi free-range bacon, smoked swiss brown mushroom or regal hot smoked salmon. We love our eggs benny with a cold glass of rosé or a fruity Pimms cup.
Oddfellows Café is laid-back, relaxed and carefree. The ambience of this café encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the simpler things in life; like good company and even better food. The menu has an option for everyone, from soup to brioche cinnamon French toast, granola to pulled pork burgers, and open burritos to eggs benedict. The breakfast staple is always a crowd-pleaser. The eggs benedict comes with free-range poached eggs, rosemary potato hash, baby spinach and is lathered in hollandaise. If you would like an additional dose of goodness on your egg benedict, throw some bacon, pulled pork, salmon or mushrooms on top.
The converted garage space is a quirky spot to get your fix of artfully created eggs benedict and strong house-roasted coffees. The café was created to offer locals a haven while preserving the architectural features of the old mechanic’s workshop. Addington’s benedict comes on a ciabatta English muffin with citrus hollandaise and the signature poached eggs. Personalise your benny with roasted mushrooms, wilted greens and chilli threads, streaky bacon and walnut dukkah, or house hot smoked salmon with wilted greens and furikake. Wash it down with a coffee, a refreshing glass of OJ or a matcha smoothie.
