The leaves are turning golden and the mornings are feeling colder, so what better way to mark the autumnal season than by enjoying a delicious meal or sweet treat during the October school holiday with the kids? Glasgow’s dominance in the dining scene has a fantastic range of kid-friendly restaurants that will satisfy even the fussiest of eaters! Here are our picks of eateries in Glasgow for the upcoming school break.
Located on Sauchiehall Street in the heart of the city centre, Jolie (as it’s affectionately called) serves finger-licking southern fried chicken as well as delicious dishes including Jolly Spaghetti and Yumburgers. This fun restaurant has come from the States to bring Glasgow its juiciest, tastiest and crispiest fried chicken.
A range of meal deals is available on the menu including the 3-piece Chickenjoy Meal, which is served with your choice of fries, drink and a side of gravy. Children will also enjoy chicken tenders, which are a firm favourite on the menu and are served with a choice of dipping sauces perfect for dunking. When it comes to desserts, the Peach Mango Pie is the latest addition to the menu alongside the Mango Coconut Sundae, which is a vanilla soft serve topped with mango sauce, mango pieces and coconut.
Tony Macaroni is renowned for being a child-friendly restaurant offering an extensive menu filled with Italian delights that will transport you and your family to Italy. The restaurant has several branches located throughout the city centre, including one at the west end of Byres Road. Tony Macaroni prides itself on offering everything from award-winning pasta and pizza dishes to burgers and risotto, making it a firm favourite for the whole family.
The ‘Menu Presto’ offers many main dishes for the price of £6.95. Choose from popular options including spaghetti Bolognese, Pollo ai Funghi, lasagne and, of course, the signature Tony Macaroni Cheese. Sourdough pizza is also available at the same price with a multitude of different toppings, so you can be assured that there will be a pizza to suit everyone’s preferences. A kid’s menu for children up to the age of 11 is priced at £6.95, which includes both the main meal, dessert, and drink of choice.
At Topolabamba, kids and young adults alike can be assured of a fabulous Mexican feast. Start your Mexican meal with delicious nibbles such as corn, guacamole, salt and chilli fries. Older children can start their Mexican meal with the choice of three soft corn tortillas with a filling of their choice, topped with crema. Options include chicken tinga, chipotle and honey pork and mushroom and butternut squash.
For younger children, Topolabamba offers a special children’s menu that includes a main and one dessert for only £5. Mains include the choice of chicken tacos, fish tacos, cheese and tomato quesadillas. A scoop of horchata, mango sorbet and chorro are the dessert offerings. Children can also expect to be supplied with colouring-in and puzzle activities to keep them entertained.
Coia’s Cafe is a favourite meeting place in the east end for Glaswegians both young and old thanks to its family values, which makes it the perfect spot to mark any celebration. The a la carte menu features many mouthwatering Italian dishes that have been loved by Coia’s loyal customers over the decades. Gnocchi genovese, tagliatelle al salmone, and spinach and ricotta tortelloni are a sample of some of the pasta dishes served.
A kid’s menu for under 12s is available priced at £8.95, which alongside a starter and main meal includes a scoop of homemade ice cream and a drink. For starters, young diners can enjoy a bowl of the soup of the day before moving onto the main meal, which has a range of offerings including cheesy pasta-penne, mince pie, fish fingers or a hot dog served with potatoes or chips.
It wouldn’t be an October week without taking the kids to enjoy a sweet treat. Loop & Scoop offers the ultimate gelato in a range of flavours and homemade churros drizzled with Nutella or Bischoff sauce. Loop & Scoop has a branch in both Great Western Road and the leafy suburb of Bearsden. As well as serving churros and mouthwatering milkshakes, the dessert chain also offers handmade ice cream made to a secret Italian recipe, which has been preserved since 1925. While the ice cream flavours change each day, staple favourites include Biscoff, bubblegum and mint chocolate chip.
